Birthday Cake

We are having LO's first birthday party this weekend, though his actual birthday is not until 11/27.  Can LO eat some of his birthday cake?  I am clueless as to what the rules are for giving your child sweets/sugary stuff before one year old...he just doesn't eat any of that type of stuff right now.  Thoughts?  Thanks in advance.

Re: Birthday Cake

  • I haven't let DD eat cake because I want her first cake experience to be on her birthday! So, yes, I am letting her eat (well, play with and if she eats some, okay) her cake.

  • I think this is a personal choice, but we're from the everything in moderation camp. She's had sugar already and will most def have some of her cake. Others prefer to limit/not allow unhealthy types of foods, I've heard some moms who plan to bake a special healthyish cake, so to each is own!! The only thing I can think of is to make sure no honey is in it. Enjoy the party :

  • I've been allowing little bits of cake at the birthday parties we go to for a while now. It doesn't seem to have any effect on her.

ETA: Personally, I think it would just be wrong to have a cake for someone for their birthday and not let them eat it.

  • Well she has had some sweets but for her birthday I am going to make a yellow cake with applesauce and bananas.  Instead of the oil and eggs.  It will make it a little bit "healthier".  She loves sweets so I know she will go crazy eating it so I want to limit the sugar.

  • I'm making DD a sugar free pumpkin/sweet potato/applesauce cake for her bday so I wont worry about how much she'll eat.

  • Eh it's his bday I will let him have cake. It's not like he is going to eat that much anyway. Besides I am pretty strict about what he eats so it's not like he will be having cake or sweets often anyway. One day isn't going to make it brake him
  • Birthdays are special, so DS will get cake! I haven't decided if I will make it or if we will order it from a bakery. Either way, it will be full on sugar goodness. insert mobile site smiley face here

I agree with pp. One day of sugar isn't gonna harm LO.LO.
