Breech Moms - some questions for you

I'm not sure where else to post this, but figured I'd find some other breech moms here since most of us probably had C/S.

*Did anyone else's LO have a "breech head" shape ? (Basically elongated and flatish on top? One of the nurses called it "bicycle helmet shape")? I know this can't just be my LO, because every doctor and nurse that has seen him has said "ah classic breech head". Does this ever go away? I asked my pedi but she said not to worry. I can't help it, I'm worried!

*Did anyone else have a baby with a large head (mine was over 14 cm!). I know part of this is because they never got compressed in the birth canal, but wondering how normal it is for breech babies to have such big heads? Maybe this is just my LO.

*Also if you don't mind me asking, is your LO autistic? I know there is a breech/autism correlation.

Re: Breech Moms - some questions for you

  • My DD had a flat spot on the side of her head from being pressed against my ribs.  If I look reaaaaaaaaally close I maybe still see it a bit, but really her head is perfectly fine.

Her head was pretty large compared to the rest of her, she came out 5th percentile in height and weight and 75th percentile head size.

My DD is not autistic nor have I ever heard of a breech/autism correlation.

  • I wasn't made aware of any head concerns and DD was a complete breech from pretty much 31 weeks on (complete breech is sitting Indian style in your belly) - she was transverse at 28 weeks so she spent all of third tri breech pretty much.  Her head looks fine - not flat at all - wasn't made aware of any large head measurement either.  I also am not aware of any autism correlation between a breech baby versus a non-breech baby.  I also have a friend whose DD was born in May and was a frank breech - her head is fine, no issues and she's six months now - no autism.  The only issues I have ever heard about heads being shaped funky were for vaginal births - not c sections.

  • Katherine was breech and she came out with a perfectly round head. Never heard about breech head. And i know several friends whose babies were also breech.

Her head was proportional to the rest of her body. Can't remember her head circumference at birth but ever since month 1 she has always been 75-90th percentile for weight and height and head has always been 75th perc so quite proportional.

she is not autistic. Again - never heard about that correlation. You sure someone didn't just make this stuff up about breech head and autism??...

RESULTS. The prenatal factors that occurred significantly more frequently among children with autism spectrum disorders were advanced maternal age and parity. Increased duration of education among mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders was small but statistically significant. Significant perinatal factors were breech presentation and primary cesarean delivery.

Sorry, didn't mean to start a huge autism debate, just wanted to post these links so you guys didn't think I was crazy and making up the autism connection.

Thanks for the responses so far! Interesting to get feedback from other breech moms!

  • Didn't read the links but DS was frank breech. He was breech at our a/s at 20w so I don't think he ever turned.

I've never heard of a breech head except that it is perfectly round unlinke some vaginal birth heads which can be pointy. Many many people did say "oh was he breech? I can tell by his legs" because he never would put them down. I also did not hear of an autism/breech correlation. I vaguely remember seeing that posed as a question when researching my breech baby but that was all. At 4 m I do not see anything different from other babies except he's far cuter than the others :

  • I recall being in the hospital after he was born and nurses commenting that he must have been breech b/c of the shape of his head which was round in the back, but definitely not flat on the top.  For lack of better description, kind of like Tweety bird.  It wasn't anything that anyone else noticed and in my opinion, it was a nice shaped head compared to what I have seen as a result of a vaginal delivery.  His legs were bent, too.  They were bent up in front of his face for a long time. They even had a hard time measuring him once delivered.  Both of these issues were very temporary.
  • DD was breach. From what we can tell (she's 16 months) she's not autistic. Her head came out nice and round, DH has a big head and she takes after him, in the 97%.

  • DD was breech and came out with a perfectly round head, they wearned me about her legs being up near her head b/c her butt was in my pelvis but she didn't have that issue....my niece who was also breech did have her legs up for a few weeks.

My DD will be 2 and no she is not autistic, she's actually about average developmentally....don't believe what you read on the internet

  • My second LO was breech and delivered via c-section. She was a complete breech from about 27-28 weeks on, never once flipping back after this point. She did have a "bigger" head than average, 80%, but my babies have big heads, my DS, born vaginally was 95 % and still is.  I did get comments from nurses and doctors about her head-shape and that she "must have been breech" because her head was so perfectly round and not "coneheadish" like vaginally delivered babies.   Her head was nice and round and perfect in my opinion.  My first LO, born vaginally, definitely sported the conehead for the first couple days before it rounded out.  At this point in time she is showing absolutely no signs of autism and I also have never heard of this correlation.

  • Several of the docs/nurses commented about LO's classic breech head shape. Since this is my first, I don't really have anything to compare it to. To me, her head shape reminds me a smidge of an alien shaped head. Think alien from the movie Alien vs Predator, not little green men from mars :)

I was told it was nothing to worry about. To me it just looks like a normal newborn head, but again, my newborn experience is pretty limited.

As far as I know, LO's head isn't unusually large, and she is not autistic.
