Can a baby poop too much? XP

Title: can a baby poop too much?

DS is 7wks, is BF, and poops a lot. He's had a pee only diaper twice, but every other diaper he's ever had has had poop in it. He's also had diaper rash for the past 34 weeks that has gotten a lot better, but won't go away. We've tried several creams, one prescription from the pedi, naked time, and use water instead of wipes. I know the rash won't clear up because he poops so much.

So my question is, can a baby poop too much? As in too much where it's not a healthy or normal amount? I'm going to talk to my pedi about this at our next appt but am curious to hear from you girls too.

  • DS1 pooped in just about every diaper until he was maybe 3-4 months old. It's totally normal when EBF. (FWIW, it is also totally normal for them to go many days without pooping... the range is huge.) DS2 pooped in every diaper until this week. Now it's about every other diaper - still very frequent.

ETA: Try coconut oil on the rash. It has worked really well for both of my boys!

  • When I was only breastfeeding just about every diaper my DS had was poop. And he had the same problem with getting rashes. The only thing that worked for him was putting Vaseline on it.

  • Has your pedi discussed milk protein allergy? When my DS had a rash that wouldn't go away we switched to soy formula and the rash went away within a day. He also pooped every diaper. Since you BF you would have to cut out dairy from your diet.
  • As long as he is eating enough, all the pooping is probably fine. The only issue is more chance for diaper rash like you're saying. DS pooped ALL THE TIME when he was a newborn. Between pee and poop we went through 20 diapers a day for the first month or so. It will definitely slow down, especially once he's on solids and/or formula. DS has a fast metabolism (like DH), but I will say he's never once been constipated which I know a lot of parents have to deal with.

  • It's normal just very expensive. I'm having the same problem and it feels like we are going through 2 packs of diapers in just a week.

Thanks for the responses. The reassurance is appreciated! We're going through about 20 diapers a day too, and yes, it's expensive!!

My pedi asked how much milk I drink at our last appt and we briefly talked about milk allergy. She didn't seem to think that he has an allergy, but I'm curious and am going to quit drinking milk for about a week and see if anything changes.

  • I was also going to ask about the milk allergy b/c of the rash that won't go away.  I'd cut out all dairy (not just milk) for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

Whoa, all dairy?!?   That'll be hard seeing that cereal, cheese, and ice cream are three of my favorite things!  But moms make sacrifices for their kids, so what the heck. I'll give it a shot. Anything to make his little butt better.

Coconut oil is the only think I'll put on DS if he starts to get a rash. It clears it up fast!

  • If his butt is not dry before you put cream on it, it won't help.  DS2 had HORRIBLE diaper rash (it was almost bleeding) and he pooped all. the. time.  Seriously, like every half hour.  I was going out of my mind.  We got the diaper rash under control after a few weeks.  It still flares up but not nearly as bad and we can get rid of it quicker.  I *still* dry his butt with a cotton ball every time I wipe it with a diaper wipe, rash or no rash.  If he has rash, then I put Aquaphor on it.  We don't think wipes are the issue because he already had a rash at 2 days old after using nothing but paper and water in the hospital.  Anyway, we think he is allergic to cow milk protein and soy, but so was DS1 and DS1had NO diaper rash so I don't think it has to be related.  If it helps, he started pooping less often at 7-8 weeks old.  That's what helped the rash the most.  Thank goodness.
