Maine Babies

4 month olds...

Anyone have a baby that is/was 4 months and still waking 3-4x/night?  We have had one good week about 2 weeks ago where he was down to 1x/night, but now he is like a newborn again up every 2-3 hours...!  Anyone know what is going on?  Any recs on how to help him sleep better?

Re: 4 month olds...

  • Does he sleep well during the day?  When Kellen was having trouble sleeping at night I started thinking about what was different during the day that allowed him to sleep.

  • He sleeps okay during the day.  3-5 naps 30min-1.5hrs.

  • I don't have any recs but have heard horror stories about the 4-month wakeful period!  Good luck!  I hope he starts sleeping better for you soon.
  • Aidan is sleeping 11-13 hours a night with no waking, but he is a FF baby, and has always slept well. We still swaddle him, and I believe this also makes a difference because otherwise he wakes himself up with his arms flailing around.

  • I have tried giving him some formula at night feedings but it really doesn't seem to make a difference in the amount of time he sleeps w/o waking.  We haven't been able to get away with swaddling Linc since he came home from the hospital.  He likes his arms free and will fuss and fuss until we free them, or he busts out of his swaddle.  :(

Any other ideas?  Keep em coming if you have them.  I am exhausted and will try just about anything at this point (except CIO)!

  • AB -- what about co-sleeping? So many babies seem to sleep so much better/deeper that way.

  • We used to co-sleep, but he kept waking up when we moved around in bed so we moved him to his crib.  It helped a little bit for awhile, like I said he wsa waking only 1x/night for awhile, but now it is worse than ever.  He has been in his crib now for over a month.

  • Everyone says there is a 4m wakeful period where they regress to worse sleep patterns but then it gets better.  My friend sent me these links about it.

Jenna was sleeping 8-9hrs a night without waking and going down so easy but the last 2 nights she has had trouble falling and staying asleep - not sure if she is getting a cold or it is a fluke or the 4m wakeful period.

Originally she slept swaddled in the swing with white noise but a month ago we moved her to the crib without the swaddle.  2 nights ago we went back to the swaddle in the swing and last night just the swing but not on and no swaddle.  She seems a little stuffy so I thought the upright position would help with that - we shall see how long this lasts.

  • For us this wakeful period happened right at 5 months.  DD was waking up every 2 hrs or so where she had been STTN 11-12 hrs for a long time before that.  It lasted for about 2 wks and now she is back to being a great sleeper.  I believe it has to do with our babies becoming much more aware of their surroundings.  I noticed when I got her in the middle of the night that she seemed to want to hold onto something so I started giving her one of those small blanket lovies.  That really seemed to help.  Now she sleeps with it every night in her crib.

  • I have no ideas.  Just wanted to comiserate!  Ben has progressively gotten worse the last couple weeks instead of getting better.  He has still yet to sttn.  Boo.  Keep bringing on the advice!  Sleep
