Nap vs night sleeping

Is it weird my baby won't nap in her crib during the day but will spend all night in it, sometimes 4 hr stretches without waking? She sleeps in a swing or the car seat or wherever else during the day but cries in her crib. Normal?!

  • I'm curious about this too...my lil guy does the same thing

  • Mine does the same thing.  I've been trying to put her in her bassinet for 1 nap a day to acclimate her, fully aware that she might possibly wake up 0-10 minutes later instead of her usual 30-45.

I've gotten a few 25-60 minute naps from her in there though.

  • This is just a guess, but I think during the day when there's lots of light and activity going on they don't like being secluded in a crib away from familiar people and places. If they are napping in a swing in the living room they can still hear mommy's voice and other comforting sounds. At night they're sleepier and can hardly see in the dark anyway so they don't care as much where they are. I figured this out with my son, because he would nap up to 3 hrs in his swing but only like 30 minutes upstairs in a quiet room.

  • My DD was like this and would only nap in her swing for the first 10-12 weeks.  She slept fine in her crib at night. Then when. I went back to work I had to get her napping in a flat stationary surface.  It was a good 2 Week transition and a PITA. As long as you are prepared for short naps, your LO will get the hang of it eventually.  I don't know if you swaddle but that certainly helped along with making the room as dark as possible with the fan and white noise machine on.  HTH!
