Ladies with a fur child

I could be out of my mind, but I swear my dog is treating me differently. I can't decide if she's being protective or jealous but she has to be near me 24/7. She's 4 years old and has been "my" dog the entire time, she also likes DH but prefers me. Last night I woke up and her little head was on my bump but then she'll try to jump on my stomach every once in a while too. Last week when I was home with her for a day she decided to have an accident in the baby room within the 7 minutes I was taking a shower. She's usually very good about letting us know that she needs to go out. I suppose I'm just rambling now, but has anyone else had these things happen with your pets?

Re: Ladies with a fur child

  • Dogs & cats can sense pregnancy. Does your dog normally act like that? If not, I would say that she knows. My dogs don't act any differently toward me since I've been pregnant.

  • My dogs behaviour was my first sign that I should probably POAS. With each of my pregnancies she has acted super clingy and would follow me around EVERYWHERE!! Totally out of the norm since she was one of those dogs that thinks she is a cat and prefers to be on her own. As soon as she started following me into the bathroom when I went for a shower DH and I both knew we were in for #3. She did go back to her normal self after the births though, which was good because I couldn't imagine tripping over her while carrying a baby.

  • My two year old Shih Tzu likes laying with her head on my abdomen and has been peeing on my underwear and chewing on the crotch. I think she is reacting to the hormones. She doesn't chew clothes or underwear normally.
  • My old doggy (10 years) stopped snuggling with me late last pregnancy and hasn't done much since then. Our big dog was only around for a month before I got pregnant so I don't know what it would have been like. He did end up nurturing a bone and carrying it everywhere with him. He growled at anyone that went near it and he is normally the sweetest buddy you could find. No change yet this time but they smell so bad I don't see them a lot.

My babysitters dog is obsessed with me now that I am pregnant again. The little thing won't leave me alone when I am there.

  • I think my "problem child" Lab knew efore I did.  She stopped jumping up, stopped pulling on leash & got VERY protective when a man came to the house that she didn't know.  She normally loves everyone & she would not let this man (house inspector) near me.  She moved everywhere he went to put herself in between him & I....growling, hair standing up.  I had never seen her like that before.  Two days later I took the test & got a BFP.
  • no change at all. my cat has always been cuddly :)

  • I wish my dog sensed my pregnancy and was more calm and lovable.  The giant turd has no clue what's going on.  He pretty much acts the same now.

My sis' dog became very lovable when she became pregnant.  He was constantly by her side and became more protective.  He even started sleeping under the crib when her baby was born.

Your dog may not have had an "accident" in the baby's room.  She may have been marking her territory as a protective thing against others/outsiders.  She may do it again if that's the case.  She also doesn't know that jumping on your stomach is a bad thing.  It certainly sounds like she knows what's going on and that's why she's suddenly more protective and wants to be with you all the time.

  • My cat is suddenly very cuddly and always wants to lay right on my stomach. She did the same thing last time too. I'd say pets can sense it.
  • Our dog in generally protective, but it has increased since I've become pregnant. And my cat is more of a suclk, he snuggles in close now, which he wasn't doing since I was pregnant with DS#1

  • my dog has gotten way more protective, same as last pregnancy.  I thought it was in my head but it is definitely not.  she will randomly just sit near me and stare at me now, too, which is totally weirding me out :)

I WISH my dogs would get the hint! I've got a baby in here!

My dogs haven't acted much different. The only thing I noticed is that my border collie gets really protective when it storms. She's never had a problem with it before, but now that I'm preggo, she shakes, and stands over my body if I'm sitting on the couch, as if she's protecting me.

It's sorta sweet, but I'd much prefer the thing with the not pulling on the leash and not jumping! Her storm antics just prevent me from moving! :)

  • We have two dogs, our boy is a total mamas boy, but at the beginning he would not come near me. Our girl is a total daddy's girl, but in the beginning shoe would not leave my side. That's how I knew I was KU. Now they both have to be up under me. No accidents though.
  • We have 3 fur children and haven't noticed a difference.
