What's the difference in pumpkins?

Pie vs regular?
I bought a pie pumpkin at the store because it was the perfect size needed for DS to paint and decorate with this spider kit I bought.

I would guess regular pumpkins aren't good for cooking or baking with but there's no reason you can't decorate a pie pumpkin, right?

Re: What's the difference in pumpkins?

  • I had no idea they grew pumpkins just for pie making. That's cool.

I am very lazy and use canned pumpkin. Or just buy the pie. Either way, you make me want pie. Thanks, Chaps! Smile

  • I think you mean sugar pumpkin vs regular pumpkin.  Sugar pumpkins are more typical for eating.  I think you *can* eat either, but you surely can paint or carve either kind.

  • Ok cool. Thanks
I remember wanting to make a pumpkin pie one year and my mom and aunt were like, "eww, you can't use that pumpkin" Which was a regular sized one. I just wasn't sure if the sugar pumpkin or 'pie pumpkin' as they were labeled in the store, maybe rotted sooner or something. As long as it lasts a week, it will be fine!
  • Pie and sugar pumpkins are the same thing, The flesh is creamier and less pulpy than a regular pumpkin, and it tastes sweeter. But either kind can be carved.
  • I thought they were called pie pumpkins because they were the perfect size for a pie.  They are little, not big like regular pumpkins.  I can't imagine anyone taking the time to actually make a pie from an actual pumpkin.

Yes.  I find sugar/pie pumpkins easier to carve as well and I like the size, so we sometimes get them for carving. They are more expensive though.

While you *can* bake and use the larger carving pumpkins, we tend to avoid them because they are stringy and I don't like the taste/texture.

Best bet for baking is canned pumpkin - I learned that from my friend who happens to be a pastry chef.  Turns out it's one ingredient that benefits from massive processing.

We get pie pumpkins from our CSA, so I do it then.  But it's a pain.  A total pain.

  • We use long necked pumpkins for baking. Canned pumpkin is gross.

Do you roast your seeds too?  How?  Then how do you eat them?  I like pumpkin seeds, but it's a pain to un-shell them.
  • I have never unshelled a pumpkin seed. Just roast it with whatever seasoning you like and then eat!

You don't unshell them. Eat them as is.

We roasted ours last night, Just rinse them in cold water and remove any guts. put a thin layer of oil on a baking pan and put the seeds down and slide them around til they are coated and a single layer. Salt and put in the oven at 350 for 10 minutes, then stir them up a little then go for another 15-20.

Like the other poster said, we eat the shells.

I take my seeds, soak them in a brine overnight.  Then I toss them in a little butter and Red Rocks Hickory Seasoning (from my favorite spice shop) and roast in the oven until toasted.  Then I threaten everyone with a sharp knife if they come near.

  • Have any of you had unshelled pumpkin seeds?  Ohhh, so yummy!  So now I am spoiled and prefer to just eat the meat.  Like peanuts.
  • This makes yet another new thing I learned on TB.

Oh yes. I do love them so.  I made some last year that were like spicy sweet pepitas.  OMG.  So so so so so good.

It was this, I think:  https://www.food.com/recipe/sugar-and-spice-pepitas-162174  Or similar to this.

OK, but how do you hull the shells easily?
  • Getting shells off pumpkin seeds sucks. It's next to impossible, I just eat them whole.

    I buy them shelled.

If I roast pumpkin seeds from my pumpkins, I eat the shells.

Oh.  Has anyone ever told you that you were bossy?  Because they were wrong.  LOL!
  • America's Test Kitchen told me that making a pumpkin pie from a pumpkin is pointless.  It tastes the same.  Sounds good to me.
