Ring Sling: When can I do Hip Carry?

Hi ladies,

I have a ring sling but my lil guy is too heavy for me to comfortably do the newborn cradle carry (not sure of the proper name).  He's 4 months, 18 pounds and with good neck control.  I was wondering when I can put him in the hip carry position?

When you are comfortable carrying him around on your hip without a sling, then he's a good candidate for a hip carry in the sling.

Definitely do an upright tummy to tummy position legs out (and for anyone reading that is the best position to do from birth).  You can shift him over towards you hip if you want.  Even now I don't really carry my kiddo's totally on my hip in a RS as it gets in the way of my arm - I wear more half way between my hip and front.  At 4 months it's totally fine to shift him over to wherever feels comfortable for you.

Like PP said, tummy to tummy with legs out. That's how I carry my 13 pound 7 week old, and we're both super comfy. Also make sure that the shoulder of the ring sling is spread out over your entire shoulder, and not riding up onto your neck, and that the back is spread out over your back.
