Help! Potty training problems

I'm looking for some advice if anyone has had/heard of similar problems...

?my nephew is 3.5yo and refuses to go poop in the toilet. ?he'll pee just fine and never has pee accidents, but he'll only go poop in his underwear. ?he's been doing this for over about 6 weeks, he hasn't really regressed as he's never been comfortable pooping in the potty. ?do you have any suggestions??? if my SIL encourages him to sit on the potty he'll scream in terror, he's very much frightened of the toilet

Has she tried having him sit on a potty chair vs. the toilet, using a potty seat that goes on the toilet, etc? ?I've had some kiddos afraid of falling in and that makes them apprehensive, especially after they have fallen. ?You can work on desensitizing the fear of sitting on the toilet by having him sit on it with the lid down, then with the lid up... all while wearing clothes. ?Give some type of tangible reinforcer that he only gets for potty training if he sits for __ number of seconds without protest. ?You can have him sit and count to 5 or 10, set a timer, etc. ?Once he is willing to sit on the toilet with clothes you move to pants down, then you can move to working on defecating. ?Keep a log of when he usually goes so you can maximize your success. ?Also try to figure out his signs for when he needs to go. ?Have him sit during when you're pretty sure he needs to go. ?Let him read books, play with a fave toy, etc. while sitting on the potty. ?These items are only available in the bathroom. ?HUGE reinforcement if he goes successfully. ?Small reinforcer for sitting but not going. ?I've also had parents cut holes in underwear and have the child wear those while sitting on the potty. ?When he does go in his underwear, use overcorrection. ?Have him help wash his clothes or take them to the sink, etc. ?Have him dress himself afterwards, etc. ?Don't harp on the fact that he pooped in his underwear, this is just what needs to be done when that happens. ?Remind him that he can go in the potty and get the reinforcer, etc.
