Pregnant after a Loss

Edison Troy is here! (very long, but a lot has happened)

I apologize for the delay in posting my birth story but we have had a really rough week. Short version: Edison Troy was born on October 18th at 6:21pm and weighed 7lbs 6oz, 18.25 inches long.

Long version: I was admitted Wednesday for pre-eclampsia. I went in to see the doctor and my BP was sky high so they admitted me for induction and placed cervidil. At 5am they started the Pitocin and things started to slowly progress. At noon I was at 5cm but the baby started to show distress with late decels in his heart rate so the induction was slowed. I got my epidural at around 12:30pm. The nurse rolled me around and rolled me around to try and stop the decels. We were talking about an emergency c-section when the nurse checked me at 3:30pm and I was at 9cm. We decided to go ahead with the vaginal delivery. At around 2pm I started to feel like the epidural wasn't working very well and the nurse sent in the anethesiologist. He put more meds in which helped a lot, however, when the contractions started to really come in towards the end and it was time to push I could feel everything. I have never been in so much pain in my life with every contraction that came. The nurse gave me IV pain medication and they tried to place more meds in my epidural but I basically had a natural birth with very little pain medication. I pushed for over two hours and finally they had to use vacuum assist. At 6:21pm my little boy came into this world with the most wonderful cry and I nursed him right away.

We were discharged from the hospital on Saturday afternoon and came home. We had some challenges breast feeding because he wants his milk right away instead of working for it. Saturday night was awful trying to get him to nurse. By Sunday he hadn't had a dirty or wet diaper in over 12 hours so I called the lactation nurse who told me to keep trying every hour to nurse and that he was fine. By mid Sunday I started pumping and giving him milk by bottle because he was so lethargic he could latch on. He was jaundiced. I called the pediatrician who admitted us to a hospital nearby and we had to spend two days in the hospital due to critically high bilirubin levels. On Wednesday we got to bring our baby home and it has been wonderful ever since. I am still having to pump because he won't latch on. We are meeting with the lactation nurse on Saturday to see if he can go back to the breast. If not, it's okay because he is healthy and still getting the good stuff :) I will post pictures later because I haven't transferred them from my phone and camera to my computer. Just wanted to let everyone know he is here safe and sound (with a few obstacles) and we are doing great.

  • I'm sorry you didn't have the delivery you'd envisioned, but I'm so glad to hear he is here and he is fine.  Congratulations!  And good for you for listening to your gut that something wasn't right regarding the jaundice.

I had similar experiences in some ways (pre-e induction when Full Term with lots of unexpected twists, baby wouldn't latch and became lethargic...they had me supplement to get his blood sugar up...which likely prevented the jaundice since he was borderline with the supplements).

How are you doing with the pre-e?  Is your BP back down?

We lost our first (EDD 07/23/12) after finding out at 12 weeks there was no longer a heartbeat. Our rainbow was born 05/22/13 and was worth all we went through.

  • Wow, very eventful time for you guys! But I am glad everyone is well and things are going good for you..

I had Pre-e with my first DS, and had to be induced and everything. So I totally know how that is.

    Congrats!
