Question about Gliders

First, why are they so expensive - ugh! And then extra for the ottomans - double ugh! Now that's off my chest...

We went to BBB to check out their selection as our starting point. The gliders fell basically into two categories: the cushy chair style and the wooden frame style. Besides aesthetics, the biggest difference we were noticing was that the wooden frame ones lock (manual or automatic) when you get up and the cushy ones did not.

I really like the ones that look more like a piece of real furniture, and it would allow me to get a more contemporary style that would better match our nursery and house. However, my DH really liked how the wooden frame ones lock when I get up. He's worried about me falling if it glides/swivels while I get up and hurting myself or the LO.

What are your thoughts on the locking feature? Is this a big deal?

Also, accompanying ottomans ... yes or no?

Re: Question about Gliders

  • I used to want the wooden ones but I wasn't able to find one that I loved, but I did find a big fluffy one that looks like a regular armchair that DH and I both love.  We didn't even notice the whole locking/not locking thing.  We thought about how comfortable we would be sitting up at 3 am with LO or falling asleep in it if needed so that definitely meant we will go with the fluffy chair we found and loved.  As for Ottomans, I would definitely get it if funds and space permit.  Gotta make sure you're comfortable.  You'll be spending A LOT of time in there.

  • We have the wooden framed glider. We used the lock feature a lot once we moved DD to a toddler bed and she had free roam of her room at night. We still had the glider so we could read a book before bed so it made me feel safer to know she couldn't get her fingers in there.
  • I didn't care for either style, so I just sought out the least expensive option.  The lock option wasn't a consideration for me at all, though.

Anyway, I bought the wooden frame type w/lock.  I found a Shermag w/ottoman included at BRU for $150 at the Black Friday Sale.  They have this deal every year.  I'm pleased with it, and glad I bought it.

  • I have never had an issue with getting out of my "unlocking" glider.

This...and we got a chair glider that reclines so we didn't need an ottomon. FWIW, I don't even really use the recline feature and if I were to get an ottomon I probably wouldn't get the one that matches. I would get a pretty poof instead.
