Day Trip

My mom-friend and I are taking our babies to Boston tomorrow. We're staying overnight at my grandparent's house and spending Saturday in Boston and going to the aquarium.

Anybody have any tips for day trips with baby? I don't think I've really been out with her all day before. I'm worried about naps. Usually I always have my car as a back up, somewhere I can go and put her down for a little nap, but we're taking the T into Boston, so I'll have to do without!

Re: Day Trip

  • That sounds awesome! Can you plan to go between naps? If not, will she sleep when you wear her? Maybe if you find somewhere quiet and wear her she'll sleep?

  • For me in that situation, the only chance of her napping would be to wear her. She would still nap far less than usual but probably be OK at least until the ride home where she would scream bloody murder for a while because she was overtired. This happened when we went to Ikea for the day (a trip for us due to distance). Best of luck! It's nice to do something like that on occasion though even though it does throw that one day off.

  • My plan is to wear her essentially the whole time. She has napped in the mei tai once but only once I covered her up with a blanket (She could breathe, don't panic), I think it was because seeing everything around her was stimulating enough to keep her awake.

  • There is not even a remote chance that my girls would nap in the city surrounded by sights and sounds. They would have to be covered or blocked off somehow, they're just too nosy.

  • And good thing you're going Saturday - I hear Sunday and Monday are supposed to be brutal! They're saying that the hurricane on Monday could be worse damage wise then last year's storm,

  • Another vote to wear her.  We went to visit family in Seattle a month ago and we were downtown most of the day. I wore her the whole time and she took 2 naps while we walked around. I had her in the Ergo and could pull the shade over her head when she got sleepy.  Sounds like you have a fun trip ahead!

  • I was going to suggest the stroller too, but I didn't think about the whole lugging it around all day issue. I bet if she gets tired enough, she'll fall asleep!

    I hope you have fun!

  • We have done a whole day trip a couple of times, luckily for us our ds is used to napping where ever we are even if there is loud noise around or anything like that, if he's tired he will sleep. So that day we were out I wore him and it was pretty easy. I carried a small bag with diapers a small case of wipes the container for formula and 3 or 4 bottles ready with water. I also took an extra set of clothes.

  • I did a day trip in NYC with a stroller and it worked pretty well.  Friendly people offered to help when the subway only had stairs and not elevators.  She will sleep in a carrier, but she hates it - she'd rather stretch out in the stroller.  Otherwise I just packed whatever I normally have in the diaper bag.  Food, toys, diaper stuff, extra clothes.  It went well.  There was so much to see that Lucia loved it!

  • If you wear her and you guys are walking around I'm sure she will fall asleep.  I also suggest maybe using a backpack instead of your regular diaper bag because it would probably be easier to carry it while wearing her.  I would pack about 12 diapers (although with cloth I don't know how that would go) a blanket, burp cloth, at least one change of clothes, a couple smallish toys and maybe some puffs or cheerios for entertainment and a snack if she eats those.

She will probably eventually get restless if you are out all day and you would want to take her out and let her stretch and play a little.  Others suggested a stroller, but I think that would be more hassle than it's worth and my DD NEVER sleeps in the stroller, but she will when I wear her.

  • I never got into wearing Eli, so I'm not help there. But we went to Michigan for the weekend and were gone all day for 2 days. It may be a hassle but Eli napped just fine in the stroller. And I just doubled up on necessities in the diaper bag, along with toys and snacks.

  • Dd napped in her stroller 2 weekends ago in the middle of a large fall festival. It was in our downtown area and there were live bands and lots of noise.

Does your dd ride in the stroller well? It would be a good alternative.

This for Aria. I would still wear her, but chances are slim to none that she'd actually nap. :)
