Body temp in toddlers

Last winter when our babies were still small I know we had to be careful about keeping them in just the right amount of clothing because they couldn't regulate their body temperature, but how about toddlers? I ask because I'm trying to decide if L needs a snowsuit or not. Our winters are fairly moderate and it doesn't snow, but it will get down to just above freezing. We don't have a car and have to walk to the grocery store, so we're outdoors for 30 minutes to an hour daily. I'm usually fine in just my down jacket, jeans, and maybe some tights or long underwear. Do you think L will do okay in the same? Full body snowsuits seem pretty expensive so I don't want to get that and a coat unless I have to.

ETA: When she's in her stroller I can just tuck a blanket around her legs but I'm guessing she'll be doing a lot of independent walking by then.

Re: Body temp in toddlers

  • I'm not sure how they are at regulating their body temp at this age. If you do decide to get a snow suit this year though you can get a two piece. We have one that has the pants/overalls and a jacket that you can wear together or separate. This way you can use the jacket part daily and then add the overall part on really cold days. It will save you from buying a separate full snow suit and a jacket. Probably cheaper that way.

Last winter when we went out I would put S in a regular outfit, a long sleeve onsie, a hat and the bundle me. I would throw a blanket over the carseat to block the wind. This year I bought him a snow suit at the GAP outlet on sale for 28 for when it snows and I bought him a jacket. I plan on just dressing him warm and throwing a blanket on him. I don't see us being out for long periods of time like you will be with your LO. They sell fleece lined jeans that I picked up for S and they seem like they will keep him warm. Also maybe you can put leggings under her sweats or jeans as an extra layer. Do they have the bundle me for your stroller?

Duh, I totally forgot about our Bundle Me. I guess she's all set then, and if we go to the park I'll just layer. You got a good bargain on the Gap snowsuit...I went in today and their baby down jackets are 70 to 90, the same as adult ones!
