Hey there!! I love this board. Just wanted to say that.
Sooo all good news so far! They did his ultrasound and chest xray today. Totally normal. No masses.. no cancer.. nothing. They did a urine test which came back really concentrated which they said was good. The vet said that when there's severe kidney failure, urine comes back not concentrated at all. His creatine was up to 3.8 today but she thinks that's because he's so severely dehydrated. She did a more comprehensive blood draw to check for his calcium which was elevated. She said that's what she's most concerned about. BUT she said that alot of different things can cause elevated calcium so she said it can be anywhere from malignent cancer to prostate infection. She said some is treatable with anti-biotics and some is not.
He's staying over night there tonight and maybe tomorrow night. He's on iv fluids and an anti-biotic in case of infection now. My son, myself, and my mom visited him after work today so we spent maybe 30 minutes with him.
They sent out more labs to MSU tonight which she referred to as a malignency panel which should tell us more about his elevated calcium and whether or not there's concern for cancer.
She said his prostate is enlarged but he's not fixed so she said that a lot of the time that's normal for intact males. She said it could mean prostate cancer but they didn't find any other red flags for prostate cancer so she doubts it.
He's got a swollen ankle that she asked me about.. she siad sometimes dogs get boney tumors.. but he's had that since he was a puppy so she's not concerned about that either.
All in all, she said she can't rule out kidney disease altogether but the kidneys are not what she's concerned about now. She's mainly concerned with his calcium levels.
It was hard because so much of this was over my head but she mentioned something about his platelets being low. She said 70,000 which is the low end of normal. So she said it's not a red flag but she wants to keep an eye on it and make sure that they don't lower any more because it could suppress his immune system.
I feel SO much better about this though. I feel like someone is truly figuring out what's going on with him and no matter what happens I will KNOW that I did everything I could for him and made an informed decision. I'm hoping that he gets better with the fluids and comes back with some infection. She said they did the chest xray because cancer most typically goes to the lungs but his lungs were clear. Which is good!!
Thank you so much for asking!!
