Broken tooth!!!

I was leaving work just now and one of my back molars broke! I felt something in my chewing gum, and it was almost half my tooth!!
I havent gone to a dentist since I moved her 3 or 3 years ago. So obviously I'll have to find someone ASAP.
Has anybody has this happened whole pregnant? Any guess what could be the solution? I'm terrified of needles and also don't want to drug up my baby, obviously. But this problem can't linger 6 to 7 more months either.
Blurgh!

Re: Broken tooth!!!

  • Do you grind your teeth?  I do and I used to break them every couple of years until I invested in a bite guard to wear at night.  Hopefully, you don't have a deep cavity or need a root canal.  It is possible that you might just need a crown placed.  Worse comes to worse, you could pull it and worry about it after.  I had some dental work done recently (like last week) and as long as you don't do gas, the baby should be fine.

  • Do you have any fillings back there? I once broke a back molar when the filling cracked and then my tooth was in a few pieces. This was when I was young though and it was a baby tooth so it was okay that it broke and they didn't have to repair it.

  • I do hav a filling in that tooth. I'm pretty convinced the dentist who did it 8 years ago did a bad job.
I'm really hoping for something temporary. After birth, I'll be more brave about medical things I assume.

  • I am having a filling in two weeks (through a dentist I've used for years and trust wholeheartedly) and she said they absolutely get permission from your OB before doing any work (she explained what was fine and what was not) so I'd make sure that communication happens and your OB is absolutely on board with the treatment.

  • I had a root canal in my FRONT tooth when I was pregnant last time. I was a hormonal mess. Your teeth are apparently weaker when you're pregnant. I had a cavity in the same tooth previously and the cavity went even deeper to the root which caused excruciating pain. The Novocaine doesn't have a huge effect on the baby, but I know they try to limit it. I think the x-rays they had to do were more worrisome, but they padded me up several times...fun times.

  • I have a pregnancy tooth story... I was in early labor with DS (the day before he was born) and DH an I were out at Bob Evans.  All of a sudden I noticed that my eggs tasted sandy...  yeah I chipped my tooth!  What sucked the most was that it was New Year's Eve so my dentist's office was closed not to mention I don't think I would've been able to sit still during contractions anyway!  So my contractions got worse and I was in the hospital that night and gave birth to DS on New Year's Day complete with a chipped tooth!  It wasn't a front tooth but I was still self conscious about it when I smiled when my visitors came.  I finally ended up getting it fixed about a month later.

Anyway just wanted to share my story... I hope you get your tooth fixed!  Good luck!
