Toddlers: 24 Months+

Clothing help for tall skinny toddler...

DD is tall (97%) and thin.  I am having a really hard time finding clothes for her.  Her shirts all seem too short (even some of the 3Ts!).  Also, all of her pants look like high waters.  She's in 2T and I have tried 3T but the problem is that they end up being way too big in the waist.  So her pants are either falling down or too short.  We have tried a belt but she really hates it for some reason.  Any suggestions?

Re: Clothing help for tall skinny toddler...

  • We have a similar issue with DD1. She is 87% for height and 25% for weight. She really needs 3T for length, but can still wear 24 month in the waist. She wears a lot of dresses and tunics with either leggings (which seem to fit slimmer than regular pants) or tights. If she needs to wear pants, I look for the kind with the adjustable waist. They're still baggy on her, but I can usually get them tight enough to at least stay up. I've also heard diaper snappers work well, but haven't tried them myself.

  • As a toddler DD1 was off the charts for height and 75th for weight. (At 3 years she was 41 1/2" and 36 1/2 lbs, wearing a size 4 or 4T.) Even now her waist is a size 5, but for length she needs a 7. Slim sizes don't start until 4.

I only bought pants with adjustable waist bands for a long time. Most jeans in toddler sizes have these. I also found that some brands fit slimmer. Right now Oshkosh is the only place we can get yoga pants or sweatpants. We LOVE Oshkosh. TCP, Circo brand (Target), Jumping Beans (Kohls), and ON also tend to fit a bit slimmer, and leggings are usually tight enough from any store.

  • DS is tall and skinny. We've had luck with carter's (their adjustable waist pants) and actually the Koala brand at BRU has long pants that adjust in the waist too.

  • My daughter is super tall and skinny.  I just bought her some Levi's from Kohls that seem to fit a little more slim.  They have the adjustable waist.  I also like Gap jeans because they run a little more slim than others we've tried.  I also put her in a lot of tunic tops with leggings and dresses.

  • We usually do the adjustable pants from Old Navy. We also have Dapper Snappers, which are awesome (basically like a belt that only snaps in the back).
  • How about dresses? My daughter has a similar problem with pants, so she wears dresses with tights about 95% of the time. She wears 3Ts for length. Sometimes they're a little big around the chest/shoulders, but most of the time they're fine. I only buy pants with the adjustable waist band (old navy, gap, and gymboree sell them). I set them on the smallest setting. They're still a little big, but they don't fall down.

DS is the same and this is what we have the best luck in as well.

  • Thanks everyone! DD hates dresses right now so we are stuck with pants : I have had trouble finding adjustable pants but it sounds like I need to look harder! Also I have never heard of dapper snappers but they sound great!

  • I have these for DS.  They cinch up the back of his pants so they're not too big.  Still easy to get them on and off for potty/changing.

  • My DS just turned 2 and is 23 pds and 33.5 inches tall. He is a tiny peanut and I found nice jeans at Old navy & baby gap with the adjustable waist very helpful, he is between 18-24 months in his waist and these jeans are the only ones he can wear. Some also just told me that Osh Gosh has adjustable pants too!!!

    Goodluck!!!

  • My DS isnt super tall but he is apparently super skinny b/c all his pants even a size too small fall off him...I find that Old Navy runs small & I buy him a lot of their adjustable waist pants. Will she wear leggings & tunics or bigger shirts? That seems like a safe bet since leggings are tight? I don't buy CP at all b/c they were all huge on my kids (both generally around 50%ile) in length & waist so maybe htey'd be good for you DD b/c of the length.

DD on the other hand has a belly & I used to love Gap stuff for her but now it is all too slim in the midsection and doesnt fit her at all (she's not really chubby, just has a belly, all other parts are average sized) so maybe try them for your DD.
