S/O: Showing up unannounced

I was just thinking how crazy it is now that we have cell phones.

How many of you would change your answer if we did not have cell phones?  Like what if you were just out and about at your friends or family's neighborhood and wanted to stop by, or if they did the same to you?  Would you be more understanding?

Re: S/O: Showing up unannounced

  • Well yeah, if we still had gravel roads and horse buggies I probably won't turn them away... but I would be evil eyeing my DH as his parents sat there.
  • We kind of have an open door policy, so it wouldn't bother me (unless it was my in-laws!)  However, if it was something I wasn't comfortable with then I still wouldn't be comfortable with it.  I mean, you know where you're going when you leave the house, so pick up the land line phone & call.  OR arrange a get-together earlier in the week.

  • There are still payphones they could stop and use. With the exception of few close relatives I would not want people just stopping by, phone or not. My parents do not have cell phones and they don't stop in without calling if they are near a relative's house.

Just call. It doesn't take much effort.

  • No, it wouldn't change my feelings. If coming over to my home is that important, they can figure out how to use a landline and call beforehand. I just won't answer the door for unnanounced guests. I'm a b!tch like that.

  • When I was living alone having friends stop in before cell phones was no issue. It drives me effing nuts now that I have a kid that naps and dogs that bark. MIL walked into my house unannounced as I was carrying pumped milk to the fridge. Not effing cool. She was seconds away from seeing me topless. She actually started random pop ins when I went on mat leave early. I'd be organizing shelves and watching tv at the same time and she would walk right in and stand between me and the tv. FIL was topless that time.

  • Cell phones didn't become commonplace (sort of) until I was a senior in high school, so up unti lI was about 17, this was normal.  Friends would always stop by without calling first, and I never found it annoying (unless it was a boy and I looked like crap, then I would be mortified).  So yes, I think if cell phone didn't exist, my answer would probably change.  Unless it was the ILs.  Landlines exist for a reason, and it is specifically so ILs can call first.
  • My answer wouldn't change because I don't mind the unannounced drop in.

When I was on mat leave I would pray that someone would drop in due to overwhelming boredom.

I'd still be annoyed if it wasn't a good time, but I might be slightly more understanding.  It's really hard to say.

    Yes
