IUD and bleeding

So I don't know if I'm getting my period or what..
I'm 4 1/2 months pp, EBFing and got my IUD put in 2 1/2 months ago.

Every time we have sex, I bleed. Last time, about 2 weeks ago, I bled enough to wear a pad for about 4 days.

About a week ago I started getting really painful cramps. We had sex Sunday night and I started bleeding on Tuesday and it's super heavy. I bled through a tampon and pad in about 4 hours last night and am still bleeding really heavily with bad cramps.

I called my OBGYN and he said the cramping was due to the IUD but I hadn't started bleeding when I talked to him. Has anyone gone through this? Should I call back?

Re: IUD and bleeding

  • My daughter is 5 months and ebf. I got the mirena after my 6 week appointment pp and have experienced light bleeding on and off ever since. I got cramps in the beginning but no longer get them, just intermittent and unexpected bleeding anywhere between hours and days. It does seem to be happening less and less the longer i have the iud. I'm not concerned because i was warned that this was a symptom that can last up to 6 months after insertion.

  • My first period with Mirena was GNARLY. Like, heavy, clotted, gunky nastiness. And I still spot after sex sometimes-my OB said it is normal, until your strings really soften and settle in.

  • I'm going through the same thing, OP, so thank you for asking this question. PP's, thank you for the responses! I really hope this passes soon.

  • I would call your OB and just make an appt to have a quick exam just to be sure nothing's wrong.

I had weird on and off bleeding that was on the heavy side for several months. I knew to expect spotting but this was more than spotting. I called my OB and had a quick exam and it turned out I had cervisidis (spelling?) which is basically a scrape on your cervix that's bleeding. He treated it and the bleeding stopped for good about 4 days later.  He said it could have occurred during the insertion of the IUD or could even be from delivering my baby. Anyway, it was no big deal but if left untreated it never would have healed on its own.

  • I ended up going to the OBGYN and after a sono to confirm the IUD is in the correct place, she said it's just my first period. She said she freaked out too after her first baby with how much bleeding there was, so it made me feel better! Really hoping this bleeding slows down. I"m soaking through always overnight pads!
