I've actually known two Leifs and one pronounced it Layf, the other pronounced it Leef.  But Leef had to correct people who pronounced it Layf more than Layf had to correct people pronouncing it Leef. 

I personally prefer Layf.

That was confusing, I hope it's clear!

I love the name Leif. Makes me think of Leif Ericson who was the first person from history class that I remembered. I suck at history, but he stuck with me for some reason.

I am completely aware of how to pronounce it, I was just looking to see what a common American response might be.
