Rude to bring DD to a wake?

A former student of mine died earlier this week and although I am on maternity leave I feel that it is appropriate that I go to the wake with my colleagues.  My parents and DH are working this afternoon so I will have to take DD with me.  She is okay to go out and about and I'll wear her in the sling... is it rude of me to bring her?

A few of my colleagues have not met her yet so I said we'd meet a few minutes early in the parking lot so they can ooohh and ahh there... I just don't want to draw people attention away from the real reason we are there.  If she is in the sling she'll probably be out cold and I'll feed her ahead of time so she doesn't get hungry.

Advice?

  • First I am sorry for your loss, I am also a teacher, well was I am a SAHM now, but can imagine its very hard losing a student. I agree with Boston, it's such a touchy subject. And given the fact that they just lost a child, it may be harder to see a baby. A few weeks ago my good friends grandmother passed and I brought dd, only because she asked me to, for her and her family she was a welcomed break, they loved on her a bit while we were there. I only stayed a short time though. Did you know the family well? If you are just going to be there for a short time can you maybe leave LO with one of your co-workers maybe in the lobby or something while you see the family? I don't know how comfortable you feel with that but that way you can bring LO and not worry about possibly upsetting the family. HTH

  • Ditto above PPs. I am pretty sure that I wouldn't go unless the family knows you really, really well and/or you find someone to take care of DD.  At a minimum, I would not be holding the baby while giving condolences to the family.
