Sucking on fingers, help!

LO will be 2 next month. Until now he was never the type to put anything in his mouth. He refused pacifiers as an infant, never sucked his thumb, and didn't even put toys or random objects in his mouth. Weird, I know.

In the past week or so he is constantly putting his fingers in his mouth, sucking on them, lightly chewing his fingers etc. The drool is insane, and driving me crazy!!!

Is this to do with teething? He's got all of his front teeth, and 4 molars. I'm assuming he is getting his second set of molars? I find it strange that he didn't do this while teething with all of the other teeth that erupted.

I'm at my whits end trying to get him to take his fingers out of mouth. Please tell me this will pass! Anyone go through this?

Re: Sucking on fingers, help!

  • When DS was a baby, he never took a paci, he sucked on his fingers.  His ring and middle finger.  I thought it would be terrible getting him to stop.  We never discouraged it, or told him to stop. He stopped on his own right around 2 or shortly after.  He would lightly bite his fingers too, and had indents in his fingers from doing it for so long.  It could be related to teething too, molars maybe?
