  • The girl had a known heart condition.

    I don't blame the drink.

  • I don't think that the drink should be blamed either.

The only thing they could possibly change is the size of the can cause it's super sized.

  • Or we could teach our kids not to drink that much.

    Well true.

I'm just so sick of people not taking personal responsibility.

I mean, if there was a story that it killed 1 out of every 2 people that drank the crap, then maybe I'd think differently.

I just got into an argument with my boss's son about this.  He thinks the drink should be pulled.

  • I didn't know people drank energy drinks without vodka.

But seriously... No one should be drinking that much! It makes no sense.

I agree they should be in smaller cans. Do they have some kind of warning labels or anything on them?

  • My husband is no crap addicted to these. He drinks 2-3 a day. I hate it and he is trying to "quit" but he's having a hell of a time. Pisses me off because it makes me worry about him.

Anywho - we shouldn't pull beverages in order to protect people from them.  We should teach people that they don't need a super big gulp when a 16 oz beverage will do.

  • I used be big on the energy drinks. I remember I used consume between 2-6 of them a day either red bull or monster. Plus my 2-3 cups of coffee. Plus soda. There is a reason I cannot live without caffeine. Alternately I know many people who not only drink coke, but drinks 2+ pots of coffee a day. My Dad being one of those people. So, no I do not blame the drink. If the girl had a heart condition then she should of known better than to drink caffeine. I have 2 friends with heart conditions. They are allowed 2-3 sodas a day or 1 cup of coffee, that is it.

Also, Monster tastes wonderful with Jager.

  • I think they are all gross.

Well I had a RockStar once and thought it was ok, but it was free because they were promoting it on Michigan Ave.

  • No, they shouldn't pull the drinks.

They have much tastier ones now. I usually did ones with juice in them or the lemonade livewire or monster. Yum!

  • I think people should use some common sense. I know that's asking a lot of a 14-year-old girl. If she had a known heart condition, I wonder if this girl's parents ever thought to educate her that too much caffeine might dangerous.

There's always going to be something that kids will abuse.

  • The fun spot in our town where elementary kids spend most Friday evenings sells Monster slushees.  Before I knew this, our oldest went there and drank two in the couple hours he was there.  Other kids drink a few each visit.

I think it's pretty irresponsible of them to sell them to kids without restriction.  Hopefully this will curb some sales.

ETA: I am that mom.  I just FB messaged the link to the business.

  • According to this link, Monster has 160mg of caffeine/16 oz.

    Espresso has 77mg of caffeine/1.5oz.

Are we going to shut down all the Starbucks now?

  • Are kids dying from Starbucks espresso?  I know a handful of kids who like coffee, but not in the droves that love Monster.

The kids fun center doesn't serve espresso.

  • I don't know about pulling them, I mean plenty of people die from alcohol. I really think they should be regulated a lot more though.

My DH drank like 10 in a couple hours while he was working as a lube tech and ended up in the ER with a mild heart attack.

They can be ridiculously dangerous if you are not aware of how they work and what they do you (beyond the "they give me energy").

  • My point is that espresso drinks have more caffeine per fluid ounce than Monster does.

There are a lot of kids around here who drink Starbucks.  They don't restrict purchases by age.

Though selling monster slushies to elementary school kids is heinous.

Energy drinks also have other ingredients that contain caffeine, but that caffeine isn't measured and put on the labels.

No, there isn't other ingredients with caffeine. The other ingredients have things like B12 which will wake you up as well and give a person energy. Everything has to have a known caffeine content. Essentially these things have just as much as a normal venti drink from starbucks. Some ave more due to size. The problem we have is that kids drink multiples of these per day. Myself being one of them. It took me a pregnancy to finally stop drinking so much of them.

That's cold.  I can see your point if it were obesity, which is treatable and reversable, but death is a pretty serious consequence for drinking two cans of something marketed as consumable instead of toxic.

How is that cold? The chick had a known heart condition. They tell you not to even drink caffeine with heart conditions.

I don't see it as being cold at all.

No, Monster isn't the greatest beverage of all time.  Caffeine is super addictive and it's bad for you.

But I don't agree with the government putting restrictions on a beverage because 4 people out of possibly millions have died after drinking it.

This is one of the rare occasions where I think the government needs to step back.

I don't see that as cold.  4 deaths isn't recall worthy.  Should they do more research?  Sure.  However, it's premature to yank a product based on a small number of casualties, esp. considering at least one of those people had a heart condition.

I don't think it's cold either. It's just numbers. Plenty more teens die each month due to their own bad driving. I don't see anyone screaming to take away all teen drivers licenses. It's also about teaching your child responsibility.

Yes, but I honestly don't think many young kids understand the dangers of consuming them and that much caffeine in a short amount of time.

Absolutely.  However, if there is a way to know the effects a product will have on a person, shouldn't that be available?

This. Like guarana and other "extracts". B12 does not wake you up or give you energy unless you were previously deficient in it.

I vote for more regulation, esp with kids. Or just ban them bc they taste godawful and smell even worse.
