Pregnant after a Loss

Dr wants me to cancel my a/s tomorrow? Ugh

Back story: 2 weeks ago I went for my a/s (my Dr told me to go in at 18w, but baby was measuring a bit behind at 17w3d) so while the tech said everything looked fine to her she couldn't get a really good image of the heart or face because baby was too small so she asked us to come back in 2 weeks.

This morning I went in for my monthly routine appt. with my Dr. and I explained what happened at the a/s and she looked over the u/s report and said the radiologist didn't mention at all that they wanted me to come back in 2 weeks or that they didn't get a good look at the heart or face. It only said "Anatomy - no abnormalities".

So then she gives me the spiel that she would like me to cancel the ultrasound (which is tomorrow!) because "you know it's a burden on our healthcare system to go for unnecessary tests" Tongue Tied.

I don't feel comfortable cancelling the ultrasound because I know what the tech told me & DH and who knows if there was miscommunication between the tech & the radiologist? I work in healthcare and of course I don't want to add to the cost of our system but in this case I'd rather be safe than sorry right? Especially when it involves a major part of my baby's anatomy - the heart. I want to make sure the tech can get a good image of it.

So, would you ladies keep the appt. if you were in my shoes?

  • I would keep my appointment. I have had about 15 u/s thus far and I never once feel bad about getting them. They are making sure Lo is doing well in there. Regardless if its a burden on the health care system it is making sure my baby is ok. That's just my opinion.

  • That's ridiculous.  It's not like you're asking for another u/s on your own, just because.  The tech told you you would need another one.

I get the whole trying to reduce unnecessary tests and costs (since it is a legit problem) BUT that is not the case here.  I would keep the appointment.

  • Another vote for keeping it. I understand the burden on our healthcare argument, but one appointment is not going to bring our healthcare system down. Since you got ambiguous results, you owe it to your peace of mind to go back. I say do it!

  • I would totally go! There is no way I would feel comfortable cancelling the appt, either. You're not being a burden on the healthcare system, that's a bunch of hooey!

  • Having experienced multiple miscommunications within my own OBGYN office, I'd keep the appointment.

  • I would absolutely keep the appointment.  There was obviously some sort of miscommunication going on with your a/s appointment.  I wouldn't want to take any chances especially if the tech said she didn't get a good look.
  • I see everyone else agrees but thought I'd just cast 1 more vote for keeping it.

  • Thanks ladies for the reassurance - we are definitely keeping the appt! I only had a split second feeling of guilt but then it was gone :)

Daylights - yes I am disappointed in my Dr. (there have been other issues with my care pre-pregnancy) so I'm just counting down the days until I'm transferred over to the OB for the remainder of my pregnancy. After that I will start the hunt for a new family dr!

  • They said that to you?! Keep it! Then maybe look for a new ob. After losing a lo, don't tell a pgal mommy that an ultrasound on her baby's heart is only raising healthcare costs.
