Bottlefeeding Problem - Need Advice

So just tried for the first time to bottle feed BM to my 4.5 week old with a bottle from my breastpump and she did not take. Its a Medela pump that came with 4 bottles and 1 slow flow wide base nipple. I dont know whether to try a different nipple for this brand or try another bottle brand and if so which one. Any suggestions?

  • I have the same problem with my 7 week old. We have been trying once per day with the bottle since 3 weeks... Still not great. Part of his problem was the flow was too fast - so if it seems like you are water boarding your LO with the bottle then try different bottles. I bought a bunch and put water in each nipple to see which dripped the slowet and therefore had the slowest flow. Playtex ventaire seems pretty slow. But the orher part of the problem is my LO prefers the boob. So he rejects the bottle a lot and won't even latch to it. I find it is a little easier to get him to take it if he is really hungry and not just looking for a snack. But we are still struggling over here! Good luck!

  • Try a variety. I found with DD1 that Tommy Tippee bottles were most like my breast. But DD2 is smaller and requires some manipulation o my breast to feed, so the TT bottles don't work for her. We had success with the new Similac bottle.

Exactly the two bottles I was going to suggest. The Tommy Tippee are supposedly closest to breast for baby. DD likes the Similac ones the best.

  • With my first LO we tried playtex drop ins, Avent, Medela and then finally Dr. Brown which worked the best. We are using them for LO 2 and all is going well.

  • I have evenflo, avent and playtex at home so I am going to try those and if they dont work then I will try Tommy then Dr. Brown. Wish me luck!!!

  • I don't breastfeed but I did try in the beginning and had to supplement with formula in the hospital. When I wanted to try her back on the breast after coming home the lacatation consultant told me about the Medela Calma bottle. It is alot like the breast, they have to work for it, even if you turn it upside down it does not leak, the nipple is the closest to the breast as possible. The problem is you can only buy them online through Medela, the lactation center at my ped office had them and I was able to buy one through them. I've heard that this bottle works wonders when trying to going between breast and bottle.

  • We had the same problem. From 5 weeks until almost 11 weeks we tried every nipple/ bottle you could think of. She just hated a bottle and would scream if you tried to give her one. We even tried the calma but she hated that the most! The nipple is very hard. I tried the latex NUK nipple last and it worked!!! She will only take a latex nipple. I think it's because they are so much softer than silicone.
