STM survival mode

Second time moms are you as tired as I am?  Two kids is a lot of work especially when one is not sleeping much. I have a 2 year old and 4 week old.

  • I'm right there with you! And DH can't understand why at the end of the day I'm beyond exhausted when I 'stayed home all day'. Mine at 22 months and 5 weeks and I feel like I'm running on fumes most of the time.

  • Yes! I have two under two and, no matter what people say, piecing together small 1 or 2 hour intervals of sleep is not the same as a continuous stretch. There is so much to do, it never ends!
  • It's definitely a lot harder the second time around!  I have a 3 year old and 5 week old.  My 3 year old no longer naps and my 5 week old stays up super late (really fussy I might add).
  • Well I guess I am not alone. Let's just hope it gets easier once we start sleeping ;)

  • It gets better... Lo will be 8 weeks tomorrow and is just starting to sleep more consistently. Hang in there! It really is all about survival in the beginning, especially with two!

  • I'm super tired but it's not from my infant.  DD, my toddler, decided to stop sleeping when we brought DS home.  So annoying!

  • Like a PP said, it does get better. I think it started turning around by 8-9 weeks.

  • I'm right there with you sister. I have a 3yr old who doesn't nap anymore and a 5 week old. The 3yr old just started preschool and has been sick every other week since DD2 has been born and I'm not kidding. And when she's sick she's super clingy and does not sleep well at all. Pair that with a newborn who when she does sleep grunts through it and you have one stressed out mama.
I hope op is right in saying it gets better around 89 weeks because I'm ready to lose my mind. This is hard!

I hope you're right! I'm so tired I'm nauseated. Getting 4 hours of sleep in one hour intervals is only possible for so long!

    Come on sleep!

  • It gets better. For me, it started getting better around the 5 week mark. DD2 started sleeping 5 hour stretches at 5 weeks, then 6 hours at 6 weeks and the past few nights (she is 7 weeks) was anywhere's from 7-9 hour stretches. Hang in there!

The hardest part though is when DD2 wakes at 6:30am to eat and then goes to sleep around 7am and then DD1 is up by 7:30am. I find though that even when this happens (like this morning) after being up for about 20 minutes, I'm not really tired so much and can usually get through the day without napping since let's face it, getting a nap is almost impossible when you have two kids! One goes to bed and the other one wakes up.. that's how it always is so I've gotten used to no afternoon naps! lol

  • I'm right there with you. I have a 21 month old and twin 4 week olds. I am always exhausted! They don't sleep much at night and I feel like I am constantly feeding during the day. I never have down time and once my oldest is down for the night all I can think about is sleep. Hoping it gets better soon.

  • Well I can say that I am doing much better this time around with 2.  It was insanely harder for me to go from 0-1 than 1-2.  DS1 had milk/soy issues and screamed NONSTOP for the first three months and then was "high spirited" (aka pain in the as.s) until about 15 months.  This time around DS2 is super chill and easy going and DS2 seems to have really matured in the past six months.  My main complaint is putting both kids in my Honda Civic clown car or trying to go to a store for a "quick" something.

  • Yes to all of it!.

My two year old doesn't get to nap.  He won't go down for one until 7 and if he does he wakes up anywhere from 9-midnight and is up and ready to go so we have to make him stay up.

DS2 was waking up every 4 hours but the past two nights it has been every 2-3.  I think its bc he is hungry, but I can't push him to eat more bc he spits up so much already.  Then it takes an hour after he eats for him to go to sleep and he wont let me lay him down to fall asleep he likes to fall asleep on my chest and then I lay him in his crib.

and yes DH is like well you keep going back to sleep so you are getting more rest than me bc he has to go to work.  UM NO bc you get a continuous 6+ hours of sleep.

So true. I'm tired, and DS goes to daycare still. I can't even imagine if both kids were home. DD needs to start sleeping more consistently, stat.
