Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Infant vs toddler formula?

Right now DS is getting formula made for infants 0-12 months but I notice there is toddler formula for babies 9+ months. What is the difference and does it matter which they get? DS will be 10 months on Saturday. I plan to ask the pedi about this, but I'm wondering if we need to switch.

Re: Infant vs toddler formula?

  • I was wondering the same thing.  It's looking like DS is not going to be anywhere close to being weaned off the bottle by 12 months, but the pedi said we should still give formula after a year if it's still a main source of food.

  • I wondered about it too. So I compared the labels, and for the Similac, the ingredients are exactly the same except the toddler formula has a greater amount of the vitamins and minerals. I plan to stick with the infant formula until he's 1. Then I'm going to talk to the pedi about whole milk. If he doesn't do well with the milk, or she recommends it, then we'll probably switch to the toddler formula.

I don't really think there's any need to switch yet, especially if he's eating solid food. I've heard that it can upset their stomach or make them constipated since it has more iron in it. But, I don't know from experience, it's just what I found in my googling

  • Same with PP, our doctor said toddler formula was not necissary.  I got some b/c I had coupons but wouldn't have bought it otherwise.
  • The Enfagrow contains more iron which is why we use it.  DD doesn't get the minimum 24oz a day and her pedi has been concerned about her iron so I figured switching wouldn't hurt.  It's cheaper too.

  • Toddler formula does have a higher amount of a few vitamins and minerals, but if your LO is eating a balanced and nutritious diet of solid foods, you can stick with infant formula until LO is weaned over to whole milk.

I've bought a few cans of Enfagrow, but only with coupons and sales that made it the same price as the generic infant formula. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

This is why I switched.  It's cheaper and basically the same thing.  With the checks I got in the mail and a coupon i got from Target, I was able to get a 2 refill pack for $12.
