would you wait to ttc for fmla?

I started a new job beginning of Sept. As you'll see by my ticker, we were going to wait till January to ttc #2, so I would qualify for FMLA - 12 weeks unpaid. I really want to TTC now though! If I did happen to get pg and give birth before being here a year, I'd still qualify for STD, plus I have 5 weeks off between vacation and sick, so I'd end up with about 8-9 weeks off paid. I'm not sure if they'd let me take any more unpaid - let's assume no.

So would you go ahead and TTC now in this situation, or just wait the extra couple months? It took my 6 months to TTC DD, so I'm kinda anxious to get started.

Also, timing-wise, it would be better for me to be out Aug-Oct, than later, b/c my busy-time would be in the winter....

Thanks!

  • yes, i'd wait.  a couple of months is not an inordinate amount of time for job security.

  • Yes, it is only two months away. ? FMLA would be very beneficial in this job market.

  • I would wait.

This baby was not planned, and I found out I was pregnant two weeks after starting a new job.  It was hard - here I was trying to prove myself as a kickass employee while running to the bathroom every ten minutes to throw up.  Definitely establish yourself there before getting pregnant.

Its a very family-friendly company - lucky for me - and they let me take 10 weeks off even though I don't qualify for FMLA until January.

  • I'd probably wait a few months.  I normally would say just go ahead and do it, but it's really not that long a time and the upside of waiting a short time would be worth it to me.
  • I would wait.  I'm still dithering about what to do if I actually get the job I'm interviewing for now because I don't know their benefits.

  • I would definitely wait.
  • yes, I'd wait. Its so hard to predict making a baby...I got pg with DS in 3 weeks after 14 years on the pill...better safe than sorry.
  • i too would wait.  partially for the fmla and partially to be able to prove that i am a valuable employee before being pregnant.
  • I would wait for all of the reasons of the pp.  Also, trying now is not going to make you more "qualified" for it to happen in Jan. when you want it to happen.  It is totally unpredictable.  Plus, for me personally, I want as much time off as possible with my baby before returning to work.   You don't want to get preg. now only to have less time with baby when he/she comes.  If it helps to focus on Jan., focus on eating healthy, setting up good preg. habits now etc. this way you will have something proactive to do right now then you can ttc in Jan.
  • i waited.  we were going to start trying in may 2007, but i got a new job in april. we decided to wait until oct 2007 so i could be established at work and also qualify for fmla
  • I am waiting untill i qualify for fmla again, and it's every 24months in ct, and it took us 14 months to get pg w/ DD. ?so yes i would wait.
