TV show call the midwife-question about breech birth

I dont know if anyone watches the PBS show call the midwife.  It is a really neat show and pretty interesting.  On one of the episodes the midwife delivered a breech baby.  During the delivery the midwife let the baby dangle wrapped in a towel (the baby's head was still in the birth canal).  I am just curious why in the world did they let the baby dangle from the birth canal?  Just thought I would see if any ladies hear had any idea why they would do this!

  • I don't know, but I LOVE that show!  It's my current favorite on TV. I'm only halfway through last nights episode.  I think their goal is to make me ugly cry with each episode, lol!
  • the theory (no idea if it's correct) was that it would make the baby flex it's head back making it easier for the head to be born safely.

Thank you! I knew there was a reason that they thought it needed to dangle but I wasn't sure why.

Last nights episode was really good.  I have to agree with you, I cry during every episode.  It is such a moving show and being a mom the things that they focus on I can really connect with.

  • Oh wow, I'm going to have to look for that show!

I've heard they do that to allow the perineum to stretch more for the birth of the head, but pp reasoning makes sense too.

  • I have never seen that show but on some show I seen a lady preggers w/ twins and didnt know cause she refused to see a dr during her pregnancy which is why the twin was overlooked cause no u/s anywho she delievered at home and luckily did her research on breech birthing beforehand. Both babies were born breech and you will break there shoulders and or collerbone by forcefully pushing or pulling. You let you body naturally push the baby out. You should not try to intervene let your body do what it knows to do. She successfully by herself delivered breech twins. Def interesting.
  • I went to look for this show and realized that it is a based on a book I read recently. The title of the book is, "Call the Midwife: A memoir of birth, joy and hard times".  A fantastic book if you are interested!

I am defiantly going to read the book.  The show started a few weeks ago and I caught up on the episodes by watching them on demand.  They advertised the book and I bet it is even better than the show (b/c they cut things out/shorten things for TV).

  • I love this show!!! All the episodes are available on pbs's website. If you download the pbs app, you can watch Sunday's show on Monday.

And yes, I've CRIED every episode!!!
