Straining and fussy?

DD got really fussy last night and seemed to be straining to poo and pass gas...she normally poos at least once with each feeding (she's BF).  She didn't poo until almost five this morning and then had her first blowout diaper! She was also up all night.  She fed fine this morning but started straining again.  Was thinking maybe some mylocan drops but don't think it would help with the straining to poo...any ideas? I feel so bad for her!  Oh and I've been doing the bicycle move, pulling her knees and bottom up...I also plan on looking up how to do some belly massage today.

Re: Straining and fussy?

  • My son gets like that every evening.  I thought it was gas, etc but I think that's just his new fussy time.  Sometimes he does poop in that time but it's probably just coincendence.  Look up the colic massage on youtube, if it is gas I'm sure that will help.

  • My daughter strains too. I've been told it's because I switch between bf and formula. I find that tummy time helps her a lot.
  • As long as your LO isn't producing little hard balls of poo, she's good! It's just her way of learning how to use those great intestinal muscles.

If you BF, those first couple of weeks your milk still has lots of colostrum which has a laxative effect so she didn't have to work hard to poo - but you aren't producing as much of that now and she's got to learn to go on her own.

Mine grunts every time she goes. It's kind of funny when she makes her 'poo' face - it's all serious business until she blows. :P
