Hemorrhoids!

Hello Ladies,

This is my first post.  I've replied to several, but never started a post in my life, so here it goes...

I'm a third time Mom, currently 27weeks and some odd days.  With my other two babies I had very minor hemorrhoid issues very late in pregnancy and then larger hemorrhoid issues after birth.  In both cases they were gone about a week or so after giving birth, so it wasn't a major issue.

Well, they've started already and are more of a problem then with the first 2 pregnancies.  I eat super healthy and am not constipated at all and 'go' twice a day.  My BMs could not be any softer, so clearly this is not the issue (sorry for the TMI).  I think the cause is simply the pressure of the baby pushing.

So now my question... Anyone else dealing with a similar situation?  I wouldn't be as concerned if I didn't think it was going to get worse, but I know it will.  I've upped my kegels not knowing if that will help the situation.

Any advice is welcome.  Thanks!

Re: Hemorrhoids!

  • Oh I saw that word and shuttered!! With my 3rd baby I got them bad as well. So bad actually that at 36 weeks I had to have one surgically removed. Yeah- beautiful huh?! It had become "thrombosed" or something like that. Basically is was the size of a cherry, and had a blood clot in it. I have really honestly NEVER dealt with something so painful! I don't say that to scare you, but just to let you know that you aren't the only one :). My midwife said that several of her patients actually have them removed before becoming pregnant again. I too eat very healthy, exercise regularly, stay very well hydrated, etc. I wish I had answers- I think it probably has something to do with your pelvic floor muscles becoming weaker through the pregnancies- even though I am the kegel queen! I sincerely hope they get better for you, and I am interested to see if anyone has found a remedy for this. ;)

  • I am not constipated at all either, but I still have them.  :(  I got them from pushing my son out.

  • This post makes me weep for my future, if we have a third kid.

I'm no help! I would just stay aware of them, and let your provider know if things get really painful. I had one removed years ago, and it was a simple out-patient procedure.

  • ugh...dealt with a thrombosed one after the birth of my second and the pressure of carrying her. so. not. cool. I was like recovering from labor all over again.

I'd recommend getting a sitz bath and sitting your tushy in hot/warm water as needed...this helps the blood flow through the veins and can minimize them. Good luck!

  • Ugh I haven't dealt with them during pregnancy but after pushing out DD2 I have had an almost constant issue. I'm basically afraid to go the toilet, and I am constantly eating fibre, and drinking water.

I'm going to talk about surgical options with my Dr this week. for those who have had surgery, what procedure did you have and what was recovery like? I've heard horrible things about recovery, but am unsure if that's for the more advanced surgical therapies.

I find mine are much worse if I sit around a lot, and are greatly improved the more active I am.

  • Kate, I had one that had clotted, and went to an urgent care place for it. The doctor tied it off and snipped it or something. It room a few minutes, and they numbed me also!

  • Sorry this got really long but i hope it is helpful! Well, unfortunately I am kind of an expert. My backstory is that I had third degree tears with my first 2 babies (tore all the way to my rectum). I developed Bad hemorrhoids during my first pregnancy. After I delivered my first child, the nurses would check on them and say, "oh my gosh!" not what you want to hear nurses say! Anyway, fast forward to a yr and a half after the birth of my second child, I had an episode that was so bad, I went to my family doctor. She gave me a shot in each one (3) and cut and squeezed the clots out. About an hr after this, I began having the worst pain I have had in my whole life (including 2childbirths). I went to the ER and was seen by a laparoscopic surgeon. He said that proceedure should never have been done and that I needed real surgery where he would go in and basically burn off the route of the blood flow from the inside so they would go away on the outside. I had this done and it made a huuuge difference until about my 36th week of pregnancy...which is way longer than I had relief before. Unfortunately, they came back worse than ever. 5 of them (thrombosed). I used the hydrocortisone suppositories prescribed post surgery, tucks pads, and took 3 baths a day. Minimal relief. I started to panic about what delivery will be like, considering I can already barely walk some days. I became worried they would burst during delivery after I read about that. Well, as I was walking up the stairs over the weekend, I realized my pants were soaked with blood- 2 of them had burst. It was really freaky but I am actually in less pain now. Needless to say, this is a huge issue for me. I hope that after this baby is born (40 weeks on Thurs.), things will go back to how they were post-surgery. I will say that it was recommended that I not get pregnant immediately after my surgery but, these things happen ;) here is a link to info on the surgery I had done. https://www.thdamerica.com/

Thanks no soup. I've done quite a bit of googling, and there's lots of info about general anaesthetic, and horrible recoveries. But a Dr I spoke to ages ago outlined something similar sounding to what you had. So I'm hoping that's all I'll need.

I have one that clots and then eases off after a day or so. Anyway will talk to the Dr and see what they say.
