goopy eye?

My LO is just over a week old. Today his right eye has been very watery and goopy. I will probably call the Ped. tomorrow but wanted to see if anyone out there had any ideas as to what it is or what to do for it? I havve been using a very soft cloth that I got wet to wipe the goop off every so often...any other ideas?

Re: goopy eye?

  • lo could have a clogeed tear duct.  Keep wiping it with a warm wash rag and massage the inside of lo's eye.  This can open the tear duct.

  • Call your pedi, but we were told eye discharge at that age is normal.

  • Probably a clogged duct. But I'd call the doc just to be sure!

  • Sounds like clogged tear duct to me.  DS2 had this.  Clean with a soft cloth dipped in warm water.  Gently massage inside corner of the eye moving from top to bottom (right along the nose).  Do this 3-4 times a day. If the discharge is yellow or greenish, call the pedi to get some antiboitic drops to help clear things up.

  • Clogged tear ducts are reeeeeally common in newborns. My pedi said it seems like almost every mom of a newborn calls in with these at one time or another. And a couple drops of breastmilk and gentle massage is the miracle cure. My LO had one around 1 week old as well and it was gone within 12 hours after the bm!
  • Breast milk is the best tool to getting it sorted, DS had it in hospital and MW reccomeded and in a day or so it was better

  • I had to get antibiotics for my son's eyes.  They were oozing really bad so they cultured it and found bacteria.  Keep rubbing the ducts even if you don't think it's helping and definitely go in if the stuff is yellow or green.

  • Clogged duct.  My DD is 8 months old and still has it.  The pedi said it can take up to a year to go away.  The goopiness has improved but we still don't have tears!

  • Are you BFing? My DD had the same thing at 1-2 weeks, and my midwives told me to just put breastmilk on it a couple times a day (I put some on a cloth and wiped) and it cleared up by the next morning.

My son had this problem when he was a week old as well. Wiping and massaging the inside of his eyes helped to clear up the problem.
