Adoption

Interview tomorrow: need some help

Happy Sunday Ladies!

DH and I have a semi-formal (eh, more relaxed, really) interview one-on-one with the Intake coordinator of an agency tomorrow. We've been to a general meeting with other potential couples already and have received basic info regarding fees, timeline, history of agency, etc.

I'm looking for suggestions of more specific or unique questions to ask at this meeting. I have very few myself, so thought you ol' pros could toss me some ideas.

TIA!

Re: Interview tomorrow: need some help

  • Are you doing domestic infant adoption?

Ask about support for birth moms, if they haven't talked to you about that already.

I was surprised how much the personality of our caseworker played into the home study process.  I'd ask how long the caseworkers have been working there and what experience they have etc.  After meeting our caseworker DH and I decided to also book an appointment with an attachment specialist b/c our caseworker just did not seem that knowledgeable.

I would also want to know if the impending holidays (thanksgiving and Christmas) will add time onto your home study process b/c your caseworker will likely be taking vacation.

    Good luck!

  • We were supposed to have questions? LOL
  • Yup, we are doing DIA. Good questions to think about...I'm honestly not sure what we'll talk about, seeing as most of it, I think, has been covered already. That's what's making me the most nervous!

If you haven't asked already I would ask how many placements they make each year and what the trend has been.  What is the approximate wait time for most AP's and for the best and worst case scenarios.

  • PPs had some good input- asking about support for BMs and statistics for placements, etc. I don't know what you've already discussed with them, but I would also ask about the homestudy process and how long it takes (with the impending holidays as pp mentioned) so you aren't surprised. Also ask about how they handle adoptive parent profiles/ Dear BM letters and how much control they have over the process. That was one thing we were really frustrated about was how much control the agency had when we were writing our letter- we were not expecting that. Maybe ask about updates throughout the waiting process- if you are told how many times your profile was shown, etc. You could ask some of the "what if" questions, if you have any. What if we have to put our profile on hold? How does the process change if we find an EM on our own? What if we decide we need to break a match? Hope that helps a little! Good luck!
