Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Waking up at night at 9 Months!?! HELP!!!

So, my LO was sleeping through the night until a few weeks ago. Now he's waking up in the middle of the night and I cannot get him back to sleep. The doctor said to check on him but don't pick him up, this only seems to make things worse. He has cried for a couple hours straight when I've tried to do this method. I've tried nursing him, burping him, rocking him, giving him gas drops... as soon as I put him back in his crib he starts screaming again. I've given him baby tylenol for his teething pain. This only helps if he's already been crying for awhile... it seems to knock him out then. I don't know what else to do. Is it ok to let him scream and cry for hours or as long as it takes for him to soothe himself back to sleep? Any other tips or suggestions? I need my sleep!!!

  • I don't let Ds lay there and scream. If he wakes and is hungry, I feed him. If he's still up, then we hang out. Personally, I don't like to let him cry for a long length of time. But you may benefit from some kind of sleep training.

  • I'm sorry that you guys are going through this, it's frustrating, isn't it?  Maybe he is going through a growth spurt, waking up hungry. Have you tried going in right away to feed him before he gets a chance to get hysterical?  My LO still wakes up usually once a night to nurse.  Also, when my LO was/is teething, Tylenol didn't work.  We had to switch to infant Advil.  Good luck!

  • Ah h&h, babies....just when you think you cracked they prove us wrong! Seething similar happened to us too. Our DD was sleeping through from about 7 months, then she started waking around 9 months. I remember coz it was just as I was about to go back to work, i couldn't believe it! I'm not a fan of CIO I just can't do it (but totally don't judge anyone else for doing it). So we just brought her into our bed, shed fidget and it wasn't that restful but I could doze and it wasnt fun time for her. After an hour or 2 she'd be ready to go to sleep then I'd put her back in her cot. I was a phase and it passed, she's fine again now. I think it was a lot to do with her learning to stand up or something.maybe teeth? Wo knows, I've given up trying to explain all these phases!! But good luck with it. If urs has been a good sleeper, I'm sure it's a phase and will come back. Good luck, keep the faith! Most of all, go with your gut instance when it comes to how you should deal with it.  Xx
  • My DD started to get a bit of separation anxiety at about 10 mos and did the same thing. Although she never slept through the night, she didn't seem to be waking up because she was hungry because her cry was much different. Sometimes she bumped the slats and wakes up. I would suggest that it's just a phase and your LO is just waking up because they are missing you. The best thing that worked for me was to pick up DD, calm her down (without nursing) settle her back into her crib even if she fussed a little and then rub her back until she put her head down. Then I would sit and just watch her until I felt I could creep away. I know it sounds like a lot of work, especially if you are already sleep deprived like I was. Eventually she went back to putting herself to sleep when she wakes up at 3am. But you're LO is probably just needing some extra time with you. I also find that more "lap time" during the day and a few more opportunities for LO to nurse during the day do help ease the separation anxiety. Good luck!

  • I have twin girls and they each have seperately gone through fazes where they will wake up screaming in the middle of the night. Usually to avoid the other one waking her sister i'll bring them in my room where I have a swing and put them strapped in with it on low and they'll fall back asleep in there.
