Babies: 9 - 12 Months

standing in the crib = no sleeping

DS learned to pull to stand in the crib two months ago and so that's when we lowered the crib. Ever since then he will not sleep in the crib. He just pulls to stand and holds on and cries and falls down and stands right back up again. A friend said eventually he will get tired and lay down. That does not happen and we've tried for two hours. He just keeps standing, falling, getting back up and cries the whole time.  I have no idea how he has the energy to stand when he was tired to begin with. If I lay him back down he gets mad and cries even more. I thought maybe it was a phase but it's been over two months now. He's been sleeping in my bed in the meantime. I would like him to nap in the crib and start the night out there. I've tried pat and shush while he is standing and even laying on an air mattress right next to his crib. Neither has worked. Any other ideas on how to get him to stop standing and lay down and go to sleep? I do not want to do CIO.

Re: standing in the crib = no sleeping

  • Since he's been doing it for so long it's probably become a habit for him. DS did it, but not nearly as long.

Honestly, some form of sleep training will probably be your best bet. Try reading the Sleep Easy Solution. It is modified CIO. I would go in after every 2 minutes the first week (the book recommends 5-10), so DS never cried for very long. It took us about 2 weeks and he now falls alseep very fast and on his own.

  • I don't know if this is a good long term solution, but we have been using a Woombie with DS.  If you don't know what that is, it's like a baby straight jacket.  It is just a sleep sack that keeps their arms and legs inside.  DS can't get his arms out, because if he has his arms out, he is up and bouncing and I have tried to let him wear himself out as well and it just doesn't happen

He doesn't cry to wear it? When DS was smaller and we swaddled, we swaddled with arms out bc in the NICU they did it that way. I will give it a shot though. Thanks for the suggestion!

Surprisingly no.  He hated being swaddled but he loves this thing.  I think because he can move around in it a lot more
