Babies: 0 - 3 Months

question about sleep training LO

my LO is 2 weeks now and according to research, it's ok to start sleep training LO that daytime is for play and nighttime is for sleep. the plan is to feed/change/etc LO at night when needed and to not play with her when she is awake with all the lights off and during the day, to make noise and leave the blinds open.

what time is a good time at night to start turning the lights off and stuff and what time during the day is it good to show her it's time to "wake up"?

TIA!

Re: question about sleep training LO

  • Babies will innately kinda follow sun up to sun down. 6 or 7 pm is a pretty good "bedtime" and wake up around 6.

  • Sleep training at that age is absurd.

ETA: There is no reason why you should put a two week old on a schedule.  Your baby will fall into her own groove when she is ready. As far as I'm concerned, the term "sleep training" means to put baby to bed and expect her to self soothe to get to sleep. And that's just impossible at 2 weeks old.

It's one thing to establish the kind of environment you want for bedtime/naps, but scheduling anything just seems outrageous since she isn't developmentally ready to be put on a schedule.

  • I turn off the lights in the living room around 9 when DS gets his bath. We need the lights for bath time but spend most of the wake hours in the living room so when we get done with the bath and go back to the living room, DS knows to start settling in for sleep when the lights are off. We keep only a night light on near the changing table for night changes if needed and the fridge light on in the kitchen just enough so we can see to get a bottle ready.

We started doing that around 2 weeks old and DS adapted to it well. He slept a lot during the day at first still but he didn't want to play at night after a few nights of doing the dim lights.

He still wakes up for the day around 6:30 when DH and I still wanna be asleep, but some days DS is ok to play by himself in his crib and others he will stay awake for 45mins and then take a nap for an hour and a half.

Just come up with a plan and stick with it, eventually your LO will switch his days and nights around to normal.

I don't think she's talking about sleep training, because I agree with you. I think she's talking about teaching lo day from night.

We started the light off at night lights on during the day trick when we got home, when he was 4 days old.

  • at 2 weeks its best to try and get baby to realize when its day vs night, but not to sleep train.  you still need to follow baby's cues to when he/she wants to eat/be changed...

as for getting baby to know when its night- take him/her out during the day, i have read a good hr or so of fresh air (dr only said to take LO out and do normal stuff during the day) like have the tv on, lights on, talk and do things that are normal- dished, light cleaning..

at night when you change your baby or feed your baby, make it all business- I hardly talk to LO when I feed him during the night (part cus I am just so tired!) it hasnt helped him STTN, but he does help him go back to sleep shortly after feedings.
