Gassy/Uncomfortable

LO gets BM exclusively...she is very very gassy and often seems uncomfortable (bearing down, crying, etc). We give her tummy time which helps but she seems worse at night so we can't do tummy time. She is on an iron supplement. I'm wondering if that is causing it or if I should try maybe cutting out dairy for a few days to see if that helps?

Re: Gassy/Uncomfortable

  • My little one was going through the same thing!!  She spent 2 months in the NICU after birth...while she was there she was also getting my breast milk...Once she was home she suddenly had horrible gas that always seemed to be worse at night.  She couldn't sleep, was constantly bearing down and pushing with ALL of her might..it was so hard to see her that way.  We had to think...what was the difference between home and the NICU?  Well, during her checks every few hours in the NICU they always took the gas out of her stomach, therefore, we never knew that she had such bad gas because they always took so she didn't have to push that bad.  I am an abnormally healthy eater so I cut out gassy veggies, garlic, and onions.  After reintroducing foods into my diet we found that garlic and raw onion are the culprits.  I USED TO EAT GARLIC WITH EVERYTHING!!!  If I even have garlic that is seasoned in a sausage or ANYTHING, it gives her gas.  I stopped eating it and it made a world of a difference.  It disappeared and my little one sleeps just fine and no long has those struggles.  Everyone was saying it could be gluten, dairy, egg, etc. etc.  Luckily it ended being something simpler to take out of my diet.  I would suggest trying something like that.

Good luck and I hope your little angel gets rid of that gas soon. I feel your pain, it's tough seeing them like that! :)

  • Also, if you are going to try eliminating dairy I guess it takes weeks for it to get out of your system..so it will effect them until then.  It's tough!  Good luck!! :)

  • No reflux/reflux meds...I do eat a lot of garlic and onions though (I feel like its in everything I eat lol). Maybe I'll try that first because I am a BIG milk drinker. Love the stuff! The thought of not drinking it makes me sad, but of course ill do it if I have to :) I feel so bad for her at night....she seems better during the day which is weird to me but whatever.

  • My little one was the same...the gas was always bad at night but ok during the day! I'm not sure why that was. Hopefully thats what it is for your little one too, cutting dairy is so tough! I was thankful to have found out.

  • We found that the HappiTummi worked wonders for our daughter when she was gassy.  She was almost always comfortable within minutes of putting it on her. We modified the timing on it because I was paranoid about it being too warm for her, but it worked.  It was a shower gift I never thought I would use and it turned into a lifesaver!
