Preemies

Preemies and Clothing

When it comes to buying clothing for preemies, how much should you buy? My beau and I were in Carter's and we didnt buy anything.

My beau wanted to buy mostly NB b/c he feels that he will grow out of the preemie rather quickly but I told him that he may be small for sometime.

How long was your preemie in preemie clothing? When did they move up to NB and how long were they in NB?

Thank You

  • I can't see siggies on my phone, sorry. What gestation is he now and how much does he weigh? Does he have feeding issues?

My boys moved into newborn clothing a little after their EDD. They were in newborn for about a month, 3 months for about two months, and are now mostly in 9 month clothing at 4m adjusted. They breezed right through 6 month clothes. But they have also caught up to their adjusted age weight curve, which does not always happen this quickly.

  • DD was born at 29 weeks...she's 38 weeks now and is in between preemie and NB clothes.  Some of the larger preemie stuff still fits her but NB is too big....she is 5 lbs 10 oz now

He is 3weeks, 4 days actual and his gestation age is 33 weeks 3 days. He recently started feeds last Thursday via feeding tube and that have increased them everyday since he has tolerated them. Thursday they started fortifying the milk.

  • Julia was in preemie until right around her due date. She's almost out of newborn at 6 weeks adjusted. She's 8 pounds and 9 oz.  Once she hits 9 pounds, she'll likely be in 0-3 for awhile.

  • LO was born at 32 weeks.  We brought her home at 25 days old and she weighed 4lbs 4 oz.  She was in preemie clothes until around her EDD and we moved to newborn.  Around 3 months actual we moved to 0-3.  She's almost 4 months actual and she's moving into 3-6 month clothes.  She's about 11lbs now.  I definitely wouldn't buy a ton of preemie clothes.

  • My kids were 31weekers and wore preemie clothes in the NICU but from the time they came home were in NB. Preemie clothes were almost all too short for my kiddos. We were in NB for a long time like 2-3 months.

  • Ds1 born at 36w1d weighing 5lb0oz at birth was in preemie clothes for 3 to 4 weeks, NB for another 3 ish months.

Ds2 born at 32w3d weighing 4lb5oz outgrew the 3 to 5lb preemie clothes about a week after he started wearing clothes. He's in the 4 to 6lb preemie clothes now and they fit him great, but some are too short in length. He was 5lb1oz about a week ago and 18.75in. The NB are too wide for him, but some are good in length.

MIL went crazy and bought a ton of preemie clothes while she was here and before she arrived, so ds2 has a wardrobe more extensive than some teenage girls. Ds1's preemie wardrobe was maybe a third to a quarter of it. Ds2 likes to pee out his diaper leg and spit up so he's worn everything multiple times.

Clothes are not a necessity, but it helped us feel like we had a "real" baby that was ours and not just some random baby in the NICU. Helped us bond a bit. We found preemie clothes at BRU, Carter's, Gymboree, Baby Depot, and online. Dh is Canadian so his mom brought some "Ever So Tiny" and "Vitamins" brands, which you can get online. We also got some from Nurture Place, which is online. We also liked the Halo sleep sack for preemies, preemie swaddleme, and the summer infant swaddle pod for 5 to 10lb.

    GL with your decision!

  • My LO was 5lb2oz at birth, 4lb12oz when discharged and was in preemie clothing for about a month.  She wore newborn for a little over 2 months and was probably closer to 10lbs when we moved to 3 month clothes.  I woukd buy some preemie outfits but not too many.  If you want to stock up I would get more newborn or 3 month.

  • After DD was born, I made DH run to BRU and get her a preemie outfit, but she never wore it since the nurses said she was too big (just over 5# at 33w5d).  We had Carters NB sleepers on her in the hospital, but they were big.

I found that the Gerber stuff runs really small, so their NB clothes filled the gap between preemie and Carter's NB really well.  DD's first piece of clothing was a Gerber onesie and it fit her pretty well at 5#.

  • by the time my girls were out of the NICU they were already into newborn and even some 0-3 mo. Now the little chunkers are in 3-6 mo and they are 4 mo. They grow fast. We were in newborns for a while though. Then just blasted through 0-3. I wouldn't even buy premies.
