keep getting sick

Hi,

I haven't posted in a long time but needed some opinions.  It is only the start of cold season and already my kids have been sick twice in 3 weeks.  I am really hoping this is not going to be the way we are spending the winter months....ugh!

Do your kids get sick often?  Is there anything I can do to prevent them from getting 2 colds in a matter of 3 weeks.  I swear they were better last weekend and we were out and doing stuff and this weekend they are miserable....sneezing, runny nose and tearing eyes...so I had to cancel our plans for today.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Re: keep getting sick

  • Its cold and flu season but I'm surprised that your LO's have been since twice in 3 weeks. That seems like a lot to me. Are they in DC? Hope they feel better soon!

  • I've heard that probiotics along with a good multi vitamin can help.  Even just to do it in the winter and not in the summer can help.  They'll still get sick, but probably not as much.  Good luck!

You're the second person I've seen say this in a weeks time.  Aren't probiotics to aid in digestion?  Not sure how that would help with cold and fly season.  Maybe I'm wrong though?

  • Yes, that's true that they aid in digestion.  But, they are also linked to how healthy your immune system is.  The healthier your immune system is in the winter the less of a chance for you to get sick.  A big part of our immune system is in our digestive area so the healthier that you keep your stomach (e.g. healthy digestion via probiotics) the healthier that your immune system will be.

  • Vitamin D is important too.  Most people don't get enough and need to supplement.

  • Not sure what part of the country you live in, but DS has had those symptoms pretty frequently lately and it's his allergies flaring up. A few days of Claritin always seems to do the trick! We live in a very bad allergy area though.

  • When you say sick and then a cold, I guess I am not clear, they just had colds, nothing to keep them home, just uncomfortable? If so, yeah I would say that is normal, our sniffles usually start in sept/oct and last tile April, on and off all winter...

But in an 8 day period 2 weeks ago, Ds had croup and a weird skin infection and dd had an ear infection and pink eye and both have had slight colds since mid september so I hear you... Hope yours gets better!
