Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Sleeps until 4 am and then it all goes to sh&t. Anyone else.

LO is 7 weeks and he is EBF. He still eats every two hours so that is killing me but once 4 am rolls around, he doesnt want to eat or sleep. He just lays there grunting and failing his arms and legs around. No matter what i do, i cannot get him to sleep and he wont really eat either. He will snack for a few minutes, doze off for a few minutes and then its back to the grunting and flailing. Swaddling is a no go for him. Anyhow - does anyone have any similar experience or suggestions on what i can do?

  • My almost 6wk old is FF and is usually up for a feeding at that time, i can get him to fall asleep after he eat but then grunts, flails, etc, everything your LO does and it usually is built up gas from his midnight feeding and his 4am feeding, plus DH gets up for work at 415am so i think that contributes that he's just wants to be up.

Try burping him and getting that gas out. i lay him on my lap for a minute then bring him up to my chest to burp, i pat his back and rub upwards on his back. if that doesnt work i do bicycle legs.

  • Is he just grunting? Or is it escalating to crying? If its just grunting I'd be inclined to just leave him be and see if he eventually goes back to sleep on his own. Maybe he's happy just exploring his crazy flailing limbs. :-)

  • I wish! Unfortunately it escalates to crying. He is not a happy camper poor guy.

  • My little guy does this exact same thing.......but it's a different time every night.  Last night he was up grunting which escalated to crying from 12am-3am....then back at it from 5am-8am.  UGH!!!  He usually eats and then just stays awake looking around.  Then when an hour passes of wiggling around, he's hungry again!  I have no advice.  I'm just wondering if we're ever going to get a decent night of sleep ever again.

  • DD is almost 5 weeks and she does the same thing some nights. I agree the grunting is gas-related so I'll put her on her tummy and gently rub her back until she burps. We just started swaddling her at night and it seems to help because she flails her arms a lot. Other than that, lots of walking and lots of rocking....it'll get better!

  • My DS does that at 6:30 am. I figure he's ready to get up for the day even tho I'm not. I got used to playing with him for a bit and then he'll go down for his morning nap around 7:45
  • If it's gas try BioGaia probiotic drops. Made a huge difference for us. Perhaps also try burping every ounce instead of at the end.
  • I was having the same issue and yesterday I tried colic massage. Poor kd was so gassy but it worked! So at the 4 am feeding he typically gets so fussy that I have to hold him until 9 am. Last night, I fed him, did colic massage, reswaddled him, put him in rnp, and then turned on my hair drye a few feet away from im. He fell asleep and slept until 9:45. Maybe it was a fluc, but I will take it!

I googled Colic massage, and this one worked for me: Check out this video on YouTube:

  • Try some gas drops. Also i know also our lo will grunt and whatnot at 4 because he wants to get up for the day.I will get up with him, and then snuggle him on the couch with a blanket over the top of us and the TV on a music station really low and we can sleep till about 8. This happens everyday, sometimes its 4 or 5.
