funny or offensive?

An acquaintance of mine posted this as a costume idea for her son: https://costumefail.com/2011/02/15/mrtbabycostume/

Hilarious or downright offensive?

  • Boo. The page is giving me an error. Now I'm dying to know. Can you describe it?

  • I don't find it offensive, but I don't think it's a good baby costume.  I feel bad for the kid. Personally, I would never put a mask over DD's face.

  • I think it would be funny if they had done a wig and beard without the black face. We'd still know who it was.
  • Blackface in all its forms is usually frowned upon.

Is this really considered 'black face'?  Forgive my ignornace, but I honestly don't know.  Is it considered 'black face' anytime a mask is made with a skin tone that isn't white?  I thought it was just when people put the black make-up on their face.

My first thought is that it's just a mask, and it makes sense to use an accurate color for the Mr. T character.

I would not, however, use anything like this because I'm clearly no expert in such things and I wouldn't want to be offensive even by accident.

Why do you need to make the face a color? I'm pretty sure most people are familiar with the hair and the chains and the shirt. The costume is obviously home made and meant to be what they think is tongue in cheek. If they were worried about the child needing to be black why didn't they color in his arms somehow or put a brown or black long sleeve shirt under the cutoff one?

This is what I was thinking.

  • I call blackface, and thus offensive.

Pretty much this as well as what pp said about a mask not being good for a baby. I still think it is funny though.
