How long did it take your LO to transition into own bed?

I have been bedsharing with my son for quite a few months now do to frequent (8+ times a night) night wakings.

He finally started waking less (only 3-4 times a night) for about a week, and we got him a twin mattress on the floor an put it next to the queen we had been sleeping on.  He's been on it for two nights, and now he's back up to waking 10+ times a night.

I want to be consistent, and I really need to not share a bed anymore (I'm pregnant and have back problems, and the back sharing keeps him quiet but i feel imprisoned b/c he wakes if i move, ), but I don't know how many nights I can endure the constant waking and crying.

For those who have bed shared and successfully transitioned your LO to his/her own bed, how long did it take until she/he slept smoothly?  Any tips?

Thanks in advance!

  • Check out the book No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley.  She has suggestions for transitioning baby from co-sleeping to their own bed.  I'm sure each baby is different as to how long it will take to get them used to a change.

  • When we moved DS to a floor bed in our room when he woke DH would go to him. He often ended up falling aslep with him and then they both slept on the floor and I had the whole king bed to myself... GLORIOUS! I would suggest trying this, OR you could start slower and both go down to lay with him. But have DH be the active comforter if you can. Then slowly you can start letting him depend more and more on DH for his night time comfort. Then hopefully since he isn't getting what he wants from you he will start STTN. GL
  • we bedshared up until almost10 months. DD was waking up SO much and just couldn't relax in bed with us.

She seemed to want her own space. It took around 1 week but she clearly prefers her crib.  We started with naps and then moved to nights.
