Temperature?

What temperature do you keep your house? How do you dress your newborn to sleep?

We have the thermostat set to 76. According to the monitor, the nursery is 75. I think our bedroom, where he sleeps at night, is probably a degree or 2 cooler than that. I have him in a long sleeve t shirt with hand covers, a diaper, a hat, and a sleep sack (arms out).  I'm afraid he's too cold, but my husband insists he won't able to sleep if we make it any warmer.  Thoughts?

Re: Temperature?

  • I think your husband is probably right! 76 is so warm. We keep ours at 70 and sometimes LO feels a little warm to me when I take him out of his sleep sack.

  • Our heat is usually set between 68 and 70 at night and we leave our ceiling fan on low as well. Our 3 month old DD sleeps in a woombie with a long or short sleeved onesie under depending on how the room feels to us. She is plenty warm when she wakes up so I don't want to add any extra layers. I would rather her be a bit cooler than too warm.

  • Holy hell is that ever hot. Your husband is right but even he isn't taking it far enough. 76 already is too hot, never mind making the temp/the baby any hotter.  Drop that sucker down to 70.

  • I guess our house is pretty warm too....

We are also at 75 degrees and our LO sleeps in a sleeper, this week he hates being swaddled, but loved it at first. Maybe we will raise the temperature and see if that helps with his sleeping.

  • Last night it was 70* in our bedroom and LO woke up hot and crabby - she was wearing a gown and a fleece halo swaddle sack. She was so hot, we took her temp just to make sure she didn't have a fever.  We took her out of the fleece halo and swaddled her in a lighter cotton blanket.  She slept better after that.

  • Well now I'm really confused.  Our pediatrician recommended 76. He said if LO's hands are cold then he's probably too cold and his hands seemed to be cold a lot when we had it at 74.  My LC said 73 is way too cold. Our halo sleep sack is not fleece, just cotton. We did that with a long sleeve t with hand covers, hat, and diaper and kept it at 76 last night. He seemed right. Now I'm worried I'm overheating him. I don't want to do that because of the SIDs risk.  I'm so confused & stressed.

  • We keep the temp set at 68 as well. DS sleeps in footie jammies and a onsie if its warmer in his room then just the jammies and a muslin blanket swaddled with arms out and he does just fine

  • Sounds way too warm to me. And I've read that baby's hands are normally cooler to the touch because their circulatory system is not fully developed and this is normal.

This is absolutely true.  OP, frankly I'm concerned that your pedi and your LC are giving you information that is so far from the SIDS prevention guidelines.  Your baby will not be cold in 70 degrees with pjs and a sleepsack.

  • If it makes a difference, we live in AZ and we are cooling the house to 75, not heating it to 75.  Pre-baby, we kept it at 73 or 74 overnight and 76 or so during the day. We now have it set at 75 all the time.
