DD is in daycare and our ped suggested that we give her animal colostrum to combat all the winter illnesses that seem inevitable with a bunch of kids in a classroom.
Anyone have any recommendations as to type and brand?
I am admittedly ignorant in this area. Cows are pumped full of hormones in order to produce colostrum?
I actually trust my pediatrician, although I don't follow him blindly. I know that he is open to alternative practices, as he allows his patients to do a graduated vaccine schedule.
I am feeling a lot of hostility from people without a lot of backup for why. Kids drink WCM, colostrum is obtained shortly after a mammal gives birth. Is this disgusting? I'm still not convinced this is a good or a bad practice.
Animals are not pumped full of hormones in order to produce colostrum. At PerCoBa (Perfect Colostrum Balance) our farmers carefully procure the 1st Milking Colostrum only after a cow has calf. The calf is given all the colostrum it needs and the extra is carefully collected for us. If the cow does not produce extra, the calf is not shorted. It's important to look for 1st Milking Colostrum (some companies use as far out as 72 hours, which is transitional milk-not colostrum).
This isn't something new--we have been in business since 1979. If you'd like more information about colostrum, please go to www.colostrum.com or www.percoba.com. There's tons of research about the benefits of colostrum. Here's one of my favorites:

Technically, the calf should get ALL colostrum produced, and all the milk produced because cow's milk is, you know, made for baby cows. Just like my milk is made for baby humans.
I actually think if you think feeding your kid cow's milk is ok, then this isn't that off the wall...BUT it reminds me of why I still think giving my daughter cow's milk is weird. Not saying I won't eventually, but I hate when people are all like "oh, your breast milk isn't enough for her, she NEEDS WCM" - what can possibly be in milk that she doesn't get and probably absorb better from my own breastmilk and her very varied diet of fruits, vegetables, meat, legumes, and yes, occasional cow's milk yogurt?
Actually, you can use bovine colostrum. Our company just won the People's Choice award and our product is certified by Cornell University. Also, we just were written up on our colostrum's ability to help kids stay healthy. If you would like the article please email me or call us at 888-617-8733.
Re: Animal colostrum
Doesn't seem that crazy to me. See these products:

Do you plan on feeding your children WCM? Not saying this to be snarky, but I'm trying to keep an open mind.
We used a probiotic for DD made by the company below too:
