Babies: 0 - 3 Months

2 month bedtime

Hi ladies,

I have a FF 8 week old that sleeps between 8 and 10 hours at night. The problem is, I can't get her down before 11pm or midnight. Once she is asleep, she will sleep straight through until 8 or 9 AM. This isn't a big deal now, but it will be when I return to work in 2 weeks. We need to be up by 6 AM.

Any suggestions how to change this? Start waking her up earlier? Will it work itself out with age? I have tried a bedtime routine, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

Thank you!

Re: 2 month bedtime

  • I do not have any recommendations on this one since I am living with my own little night owl.  However, I am very interested on how you got your baby to sleep 8-10 hrs?  With the exception of this week due to him feeling under the weather from his first round of shots, my sweet boy sleeps a 3/2/2 hr schedule every night.

  • She did that all on her own! We swaddle at night and not during the day. My oldest slept well once we started swaddling as well. Other than that, I have no other secrets.

    this!

  • My LO was similar in that age, he wouldn't go to bed before 10pm.  He has been in daycare for a month now and he has pushed his bedtime back to 8:30 on his own.  I just started noticing that he was very tired around 8 or 8:30, red eyes and hungry, so I went ahead and started his bedtime routine and it worked like a charm.  Now he's in bed by 8:30 or 9:00 and sleeps until 6am which is when I get up anyway.

So my advice is to let the baby set his own routine.  When you start waking her at 6 or 6:30 to get ready for the day and go to daycare, she will be tired and she will gradually adjust herself and her schedule.

  • We had been starting the bedtime routine at 10:30 but I thought it should be earlier. Everyone else seems so put their babies to sleep much earlier. So we started moving it up until it was 9 - 9:30. He did horrible and kept waking up at night and didn't sleep as long. I moved it back to 10:30 and he is sleeping great again. So I'm not questioning it anymore. Maybe in a few weeks I'll try again and see if he is ready but I'm not worried about it now.

  • I had this exact same problem. I found the only thing that worked was making sure she was only up for an hour at a time during the day. She stopped taking 2-3 hr naps and now naps for 45-60 min 4 times a day but she goes to bed around 8 and sleeps for 12-13 hrs a night straight through, she's 3 months now and she's been doing it for 4 and a half weeks now. If you had to wake her up at 6 she'd probably take longer naps, at least in the morning. Good luck! I found that I really need my me time at night so I can relate!

  • Thank you so much for all your thoughts ladies! We had one good night this week...she went to bed at 10:30. The other nights were midnight. I've also noticed that she seems to need me in the room to sleep. If I'm not, she wakes up. I don't know if she can smell me, or what, but it's definitely strange. She sleeps in our room, and I definitely think it's time to move her in her own room and hopefully soon, start letting her fall asleep on her own.

You have given me hope that, with a little work, this can get better!
