shift work and nannies?

I am an RN that works 3 days a week, 12 hour shift, 7a-7p. I am hoping to find a nanny when I go back to work next February, but wondering how this would work since my schedule is not consistent for what days of the week I would need someone. MH works regular business hours, M-F. Anyone out there have this set-up? Any advice/insight/warnings for how to make this work?

Thanks for the help!

I am also a Nurse, however I work night shift.  We had a nanny for about a year and we payed her by the day.  We just told her that we will guarantee her 30-40 hours a week but she needed to have a flexible schedule and must be able to work with my schedule.  It worked out fine, but we found that because of the type of schedule we have it was hard to keep a nanny because they had really long days.  Ultimately we ended up putting our youngest in daycare and our 5 year old in the before/after school program this July.

  • Thanks for the advice. originally I had hoped to find a nanny share situation to alleviate some of the difficulty with my inconsistent schedule, but the family originally interested isn't sure if they can handle the other 3 days a week at full price.

Also when did you guys start looking for a nanny? I feel like if I start now it will be too early if I don't need someone until next March.
