HELP!!! Gassy Baby

Hi ladies I need HELP!! My LO is EBF but, is suffering from major gas pains. She never spits up so I think it is purely in her intestines. She screams when passing gas and is always arching her back and kicking her legs straight out. She rarely naps maybe two 30 minutes naps a day because she is always waking up due to gas pains. I know breast milk is best for her but, if it is causing her pain should I consider switching to formula? Also I wanted to add that she only poops about every 4-5 days which I know is rare in BF babies I brought this up to her doctor and she didn't seem concerned. She went poop last night so I know that is not the cause of her gas pains today. Any suggestions? TIA

Re: HELP!!! Gassy Baby

  • It could be something in your diet. I cut out all obvious sources of dairy and that seemed to help DD. I also use gas drops at every feeding. I also do lots of bicycle kicks and swinging her legs around in a clockwise circle to get out some of the bubbles.  Also, I heat up a sock filled with rice and put it on her belly, that seems to get some of the bubbles out as well. You could also stick her in a warm tub if water, it has the same effect. When I did this with DD it worked too well and she ended up pooing in the tub. HTH!

Ok thanks do you give the gas drops before or after her feedings? I have tried gas drops but, I give them to her once she starts screaming which at that point I guess it is to late.

  • I give them right before a feeding.

  • My DD is FF so I don't have any advice on the BF side but she suffered multiple times a day with gas pains. Screaming after eating, tensing up her body and just being overall unhappy. My pedi recommended probiotic drops- all natural. She gets 5 drops in 1 bottle a day and boy has it made a difference. After only 1 week of treatment she is down to only 1 meltdown a day and seems to be a much happier baby. I'm slowly seeing even our 1 meltdown getting shorter. Ask your pedi about it, I'm using BioGaia, but there is also Culturelle for Kids. Culturelle is powder so that won't work for BF but BioGaia is drops and you could probably just drop them in your LO's mouth. GL!!!

  • Are you sure it's gas pains? The arching is a sign of reflux. I thought my LO had gas issues, but it turns out he had reflux and is on meds now. They make a world of difference.
  • I also ebf & give lo gas drops.
