Oakland County Mom in Need of Support Group

Hi all! I'm a newly married Mom that gave birth to my first child, Michael, 11 weeks ago today. Before I became pregnant, I was a working professional and very career focused. However, a month before I gave birth, my position was "eliminated" and now I'm trying to navigate being a stay at home mom. But the lose of my income has proven to be difficult and I'm faced with the question of having to return to work and put my son in daycare, provided I can find a position at a company that would pay enough where I'm not just working to pay for daycare, while my husband seeks better employmenet. Over the last few weeks, my husband and I have come to realzie that we need a support group. Most of our friends are either single or thier kids are grown and there's no one that's going through the changes and challenges we're facing right now. Sometimes, we just need people to talk to that are in or have recently been in similar shoes. We'd also like to meet other families with a child around the age of our son so he can learn how to interact other babies, not just Mom and Dad. Does anyone know about low cost support groups that would give us the opportunity to be around other families? Thanks in advance for your help. Michele

  • Where did you deliver your baby?  If you delivered at one of the Beaumont Hospitals, they have a wonderful parenting program.  You can be part of a parenting group during the day, which mostly consists of SAHM, or you can join an evening group which is more for families.  The first six months are organized by Beaumont and include an informative hour, followed by an hour of socializing.  My group ended up continuing past the Beaumont sanctioned time period and is still going strong two years later.  I highly recommend it to any new parent!

    Oh, and it is free!

  • The beaumont classes are great, I did those. I recently joined a MOPs (Moms of Preschoolers) group, its for women who are pregnant, or have children up to age 5. Its through local churches. I'm not sure exactly where in Oakland County you are located, but you could maybe try googling for it, or you could email me and I could help you look it up. Have you tried meetup.com for get togethers for you and your LO?

  • I delivered at Providence, so I need to check to see if they have a class like the one you descibed. Thanks for your feedback!
  • I agree with Meetup.com and Mops.  I have joined both this year and have realized so many moms are going through the same thing.  It is so nice to chat and hang out with other moms!

  • I'd never heard of meetup.com, but I created an account so I can check it out. Thanks!
  • It's amazing how alone you feel, but common sense says you can't be alone. I'll check out MOP's too. Thanks!
