Babies: 0 - 3 Months

what would you do? Smoking while pg

so I was leaving my mom and me class this morning, its that the hospital that LO was born, so there were these two very pg women walking up (my guess for a prenatal appt) and they were smoking!!!  WTF?!?!  everyone that was around was looking at them like WHY? How?

It reminded me of that show What Would You Do? on ABC, where they put actors in situations and see what peoples reactions are.  Now, since she was PG, technically it  is her body, and her life, but it just makes me sick, and think that I should have said something.  But then again she knows what she is doing, and knows the affect it can have on the baby.  (if she doens't then well shes got some major problems!)

  • In a situation like that, you should mind your own business. You don't know if her doctor has her on a plan to quit, or if something terrible is happening in her life and she just needed one.

  • Its fine to quietly judge them, how could you not? But it's not your place to say anything. When I was pg, I was drinking a hot chocolate from a coffee shop so it was in a coffee cup. Some jerk in the parking lot told me it was dangerous to the baby to drink coffee while pg. I unpolitely told him to mind his own f ing business. Lol. Now, these are 2 very different situations, but the point is the same. And that point is MYOB. I hear ya though, its very bothersome to see.
  • I'm just glad she chose that and not an abortion.

I wouldn't do anything.. but it sickens me as well... but I do look on the bright side of things. For example what could have happened stated above.

  • You absolutely should not have said something. It is none of your business and you don't know her life at all.

I had a very, very hard time quitting smoking when I found out I was pregnant and I won't lie - I didn't fully quit until I was almost 15 weeks along.

Anyone who is pregnant knows and (hopefully) understands the risks.. it doesn't make the act of quitting any easier though.

  • There's something you *could* do?  The only thing a person could do would be to wrestle the cig from her fingers or say something--and how in the world would either be appropriate?  I highly doubt a conversation would end with her saying "Oh my goodness!  I had NO IDEA that this wasn't good for the baby!  Now I will quit immediately!  THANK YOU!"

  • I did not smoke during my pregnancy but had a glass of red wine a month. I never did in public though because you always have those crazy women that would flip out. Its just not your place you know? We can all have our opinions though.

  • I was trying to quit before I got my surprise DD and am still unable to completely quit (still working on it). Believe me I felt bad enough that I was failing my DD without some "crazy b!tch" telling me I was a horrible mother already!

  • There's nothing you can do, and she probably knows she shouldn't. One LPN I know didn't quit until partway through her second pregnancy, and she's a freakin healthcare worker-she knows!!! Drove me crazy but I kept silent. Her 2 year old has been hospitalized twice for asthma, she never smoked around him but still, very hard not to judge. I've gotten many a judgy comment from friends for sampling DH's nice beers when out (honestly, one sip of stout will not deform my child), there's no nice way to make or take a judgy comment.

  • Why do you think you should have said anything?  Do you think they aren't already aware of the harm they are doing?

I'm not a fan of shaming people just to shame them.  Yeah, it's gross and disgusting behavior, but it's also none of my business.
