Working Moms

Just curious...

Which hypothetical situation would you choose, total gut instinct answer:

 A) a job you love, 35 hours per week, pay ok, fulfilling work

-B) a job you like, 40-45 hours per week, great pay, also fulfilling

FYI Background info: You need to help with the family finances, but it would be ok to take a paycut.

Re: Just curious...

  • Choice A.

For me its simple, Husband works 50 hrs +, so the less time I am at work the better for our household

  • I'd probably go with A, but since the difference seems to boil down to 1-2 hrs a day for extra pay, are there other things about one job vs. the other that would give you more family time?  Condensed work week, ability to work from home, flexible hours, better commute?

If you don't need the extra money from job B and it doesn't have any other benefits that make it work/life friendly or a much shorter commute, I'd go with option A and have those 1-2 extra hours with the kiddo every day.

  • Choice A, hands down. Been there, done that.

  • Probably A.  I'm in a B kind of job now that's consistently 40 hrs. per week, and I think I'd take a bit of a paycut if I could work slightly fewer hours per week.

  • Job A. Less hours wins over extra money everyday.

  • Probably A, but I think a lot would depend on how much we were putting away, especially for retirement. I'm starting to freak out about that a little.

    All of this.

  • Definitely A.  If I'm happy with work, then it makes life at home so much more pleasant!

  • Totally depends on how much MORE money you can make at job B.  40-45 hrs a week isn't bad.  We are always looking for ways to make more $ so I would probably choose job B.
  • Easy choice for me: A.

  • A.

That said, I work a very much unfulfilling job (despite my very hard work toward a good career I enjoy, and an expensive degree I'll be paying for for quite some time), with NOT good pay relative to others with my experience, precisely because I have the ability to work from home and see my kids a lot more than I would if I took the more highly paid, probably more fulfilling job route.  It's not for everyone, but my priority is the time with my children.  We scrimp and stress about it finance-wise, but I just can't give up this time.  I honestly don't think I could truly be happy, even with more money and a more fulfilling job, if it meant even less time with my family.  My desire for a fulfilling job won't ever trump the fulfillment I receive from being with my kids as much as I possibly can.

  • A - That is the job I have, only 32 hours/week

  • Definitely choice A. I had been doing choice B then switched to choice A. While the pay cut was a bummer getting more time with DS and more time to run errands was awesome!

Definitely A. I'll choose a job with less hours that I love over a job with more hours and more pay any day.

    me too.
  • Probably A. I think it would depend on how much more $$ for 5-10 hours/week. If it was significant, and I really liked both jobs, then I'd probably choose B.

  • A.  Why in the world would you want to work more hours than you have to?

  • Job "A" unless the money was really, really different.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • As much as I'd like to SAH, dropping 5 hours of work isn't really worth a pay cut to me.  I'd rather take B, get rid of debt, and save money for a few years so I could go PT (or even do option A) a few years from now.

  • A. If I'm spending that much time at work, I'd rather love what I do. Once I can pay the bills and put a little in savings, the extra money isn't worth just liking my job.

This.  And, like PP mentioned, I'd want to make sure I was putting away a sufficient amount for retirement.
