Any one up? BF question.

I see the pedi later today so I will check with him, but it has been over 3 hours since DS ate. He is 4 days old and my milk has come in but I am unclear if I should wake him to eat at 3 hours, or if I can stretch that to 4 hours at night... He's refusing to wake up at the moment, and I am not sure if I should push it or let him sleep to 4 hours...

Anyone? I wish I had a magic ball for all these questions!

  • I'm not a breastfeeder quite yet, but I was always told never to wake a sleeping baby. I hope you find some answers though!

  • I was told to wake my lo every 23 hours to eat until she's back at or above birth weight. That being said, if your lo isn't waking, I don't think an extra hour will harm him.
  • The nurses told me 3 was ideal but 4 was ok if she was sleeping hard.

  • I was reading about this, and get mixed answers, they say to have between 8 to 12 feedings per day....I think what I'll do is feed every 2 to 3 hours during the day and feed every 3 to 4 hours during the night. But, this is my first day so we'll see!

  • Thanks for the reassurance. I changed his diaper in hopes of waking him and am glad I did. He was so hungry we had a hard time getting a good latch. He is eating peacefully. Thanks!

  • In the NICU 4 hours was the max they'd let a baby go without feeding, so we've stuck to that. My ped would ideally like her to eat every 3, and for the most part she does that. Sometimes even eating again only after 2, so I think it all evens out in the end.

We usually will wake LO with a diaper change if it's been too long and she's still too sleepy to eat.

This. I've been setting the alarm for every 4 hrs at night but usually she wakes first - just don't go over 4

  • You should wake him every 3 hours until he's back up to his birth weight, which usually happens sometime between 10-15 days old.  After that, you don't need to wake them at all overnight.
